It's quite simple to read stocks.
Looking at a newspaper like NY Times, etc. You'll first see the 52 week high and low columns; that is simple that's simply states the highest price the stock was in the past 52 weeks and the lowest price. Then you'll see the stock name; ie: Nike Inc, then you'll see the symbol; ie: NKE:US. Next is the dividend pay. The dividend pay is what you get from the company annually or quarterly. If there is no number in this column then that company does not pay dividends. NKE pays its stockholders .23 cent per share. You'll see next to dividend another column called dividend yield. Thats a percent that is calculated by dividing the annual dividend per share by price per share = annual dividend per share/price per share. Also important is the P/E Ratio that means Price to Earning Ratio which is calculated by dividing current stock price per share by or for Nike 55.41/3.64 = 15.22%. This is a low number so don't expect much growth from Nike in the near future. The higher the P/E Ratio the more expected a company is to grow. You'll also see a column called volumes which means how many stocks were traded in the day. You'll also see the high and low traded on the day prior. That's quite simple since it states what was the high and low of the stock. There's also net change which means the percentage change of the closing number from the prior day. If Nike trades lower today you'll see a negative change, if it trades higher you'll see a positive change. That's how you read stock.
If you want to know if you're winning or losing money simply look at the closing number or go to the web during the day and see whats it trading for, and then if it's higher than the price you purchased it, it means your making money. If it's lower then you're losing money. That is if you want to sell it at a lower price. Once you buy stock it is not much you can do, just hold or sell.
You know how much you "own" of a company by dividing the total number of shares of stock by how much you own. Also keep in mind that there are different kind of stocks. Two groups of stocks called preferred and common stocks. At that price you have a common stock of Nike which does not guarantee any benefits. And then there are stocks within the common stock group called: growth, blue chip, income, value, and recurring. |

You seem to be trying to learn about the markets in a strange way. Why not learn how a market driven system works as opposed to order driven? Learn about level two and what it all means. What is difficult or indeed useful about Last sale $55.41.
It usually says Last Trade. This is because you don't always know whether the trade is a sale or a purchase. Let's say the price of Nike is $55.25 to sell and $55.5 to buy. A trade goes through at $55.375. Is it a buy or a sell?? http://www.shareworld.co.uk |

based on the company and the number, that appears to be the value of one nike share at the last sale.
one share means you have less stock in the company than you do in the country (assuming you live in the usa), nike has 389,000,000 shares outstanding |

general must buy parcels of shares(ie two hundred not one) and you'd own very little of the company |
