How do people get bankrupt in Stock?
I had just plan to invest some money into stock and would like to know more about it.

Can anyone lose more than they have bought? Say for example each share cost $1 and i bought in 1000 which cost $1000 dollar, fully paid. When the price goes down to $0.10, i do not make any losses until i sell it at $100 dollar right? Correct me if im wrong.

If that is the case, why is there people who can lose so much that they can't afford to pay when the market crashes or something? Isn't the stock paid for when u first buy them?

Im kinda of new in this and would really want to heed some good advice. If you have some website that offer explanation for dummy, that will be good too,

Thanks alot!

The reason people go bankrupt in general is purchase on margin. What this means is people leverage there purchase. So a bank gives person A a loan of $1000 the collateral on the loan is $1000 worth of stock XXX. Person A buys $1000 more of stock XXX. The stock decreases, say, 50%.

Stock is worth $1000 loan is $1000 = person A has $0.

Commonly the leverage is higher 2/1 or 3/1 so the decrease in % pushes the debt (liability) well under the value of the holdings (equity).

1. If you have fully paid stock, you cannot lose more than you invested.

2. If you are buying on margin, you can lose more money faster and be subject to margin calls if the stock falls. Margin depends on the stock and margin requirements set by the firm where you trade.

3. I would not be buying penny stocks (stocks under $1.00/ $5.00 depending on one's definition). Stocks this low tend to go to zero.

You might need the money for something else. You might think $100 is better than nothing. In other words a variety of reasons.

Use all your money to buy stocks now, since the prices are low, then use your credit cards to buy everything you will need for the next few years.
If the market recovers you can sell them at a higher price. If the stocks kep losing value, declare bankruptancy. Its like betting but you don't have to pay of you lose.

You can't lose more than you invest. Even if you buy on the margin, and your margin drops below the maintenance level and you don't pony up additional funds, the broker will sell your stock and you will get what he sold it for.

However you can lose nearly all of your money if you make really bad investments. That alone won't bankrupt you, but if you used every cent you had playing the market, then you can't buy groceries, can't pay your credit cards, mortgage, car loan etc., so you would be forced to take bankruptcy.
