Everyone in the market wants to buy low and sell high. For late comers, buy high and sell even higher. However, risk is often a huge factor. People have invented ways to transfer risks to other parties such as short-selling, put, and call options (not sure if you're familiar with these terms, anyway they're on wikipedia).
So to answer your question, it is by mastering, strategizing, and choosing these options carefully to get the most bang for the bucks they put in.
