How do we save for retirement in our situation!! I'm getting very upset thinking about this!!?
my boyfriend is paying child support for the next 10 years. this takes a nice chunk out of his income. i work for close to minimum wage and don't have much money myself. we live in an apartment and therefore do not have any home equity or future equity. if we were able to put $50 per month away until we are of retirement age (he is 39 and i am 33) where should we put the money? neither one of us has a 401k or pension plan at work. what are our options??!!

IRA is the way to go. Even if you can only put aside $10 a month. Every little bit helps. Another way to help put some money away is to keep a change jar. Put all your loose change in there. After it's full take it to the bank and deposit it into the IRA too. Seriously, you won't even notice that money gone, and most likely you'll add a few bucks to it when you go to the bank to make it an "even" amount. So it's pretty painless.

You should put the money in an Individual Retirement Account ("IRA"). Stop by a bank and they can point you in the right direction. This is just like a 401(k) in terms of tax benefits, but it is set up by you and not your company. The only thing that makes a 401(k) better is that sometimes the employer matches a portion of your contributions. Congrats on focusing on this now - I think you will be glad you did!

Put money into a Roth IRA - in your situation, since you're still relatively young, I would invest into riskier, but potentially more rewarding growth stocks (under the IRA). You should talk to a financial advisor, though.

I would suggest that if you have no other savings at all, that you first put some money aside for emergencies. It is recommended that you put at least three months salary to one side, in an easily reachable account.

It is said that the average American household is about three weeks away from bankruptcy.

the above answers are OK. however under no circumstances do you and 'boyfriend' invest in anything together. you have no legal rights until married and even then just a few more.
now you need to visit the library get and read digest understand these books and act on them.
'what colour is your parachute'
'48 days to work you love'
use these books and any the librarian offers to get yourself out of minimum wages -they aren't birthrights.
YOU need to work on your retirement program (visit daveramsey.com ) yourself. No wedding band no joint accounts.

Well, $50/month is a good start, put it into a Roth IRA, I put mine at Fidelity.com, then invest in mutual funds, you are still relatively young, you can do 100% equity for now and rebalance to bonds as you get older.

But I have better solution, why are you making minimum wage? I know a Mexican contractor who speaks no English and is making $5000/month. There is really no reason for someone to be making minimum wage unless you are a part timer, student or live in an extremely low income area.

Stick it in a ROTH IRA.

One of my IRA's is with Ariel Mutual Funds. Send them $250 dollars as an initial investment, after that you can send them at least $50 at any time you get some money together.

I suggest you to buy a home first.

After you have a home then you can start thinking about retirement.
