First, make sure you have capital and by capital I mean discretionary cash for the purpose of investing/trading. As a beginner DO NOT invest all of your savings. Keep an emergency fund of >= 3 months of livings expenses in a savings account, CD, T-bills, etc. something safe and preferrably insured.
Second, educate yourself. Buy books on investing, read online investing forums, subsribe to the WSJ, Barrons or some financial daily and watch buisness news channels like CNBC. I can write a paper on investing stragegies but to make it simple just start out with a book like Mutual Funds for Dummies and you will naturally evolve. This is the single most important step however it is not a step really because this education is ongoing.
Third, go to a website like investopedia.com and open a practice trading account just to familarize yourself with the mechanics of buying/selling stocks.
When you are ready open a real brokerage account (make sure the firm is a SIPC/FINRA member) and start investing.
==> Again Step 2 is the most important step. |

You can make an appointment with a financial planning manager/financial adviser at your bank to discuss this. I know natwest offer a free service and advice as I have done it myself. Not sure about other banks.
Go and speak to natwest, they will be able to help and you don't have to be a customer either. |

Sorry, LoopeyLoz - but Natwest do not offer sharedealing through their branches, but they do have a Brokerline account, where you will receive no advice but have to pick the stocks yourself.
The branch Financial Advisers are not independent, so will only offer you the products (funds) of Natwest Life (Norwich Union).
The best advice I can give is to open a share dealing account, but you must be confident in your stock selection. Otherwise, it is best to see an Independent Financial Adviser, or a Stock Broker if you have a larger amount to invest, discuss your needs and let them recommend a solution for you. |

do some research into which shares you want to buy/sell, then find a broker. There will be lots online you can find, failing that most banks offer broking services. |
