How do you invest in oil?
With predictions of $200 a barrel in two years, why not?

Buy one of the ETFs (exchange-traded funds). I suggest ticker USO. Or, you could buy the contracts on the NYMEX if you have a commodities brokerage account.

Sleepyguy
Definetly a good idea. I suggest getting in as low as possible. Find a great oil company but wait for the stock price to pull back a bit. They are very high right now. It kinda has this high and low pattern so get in the low part if you can.

Oil futures are a good idea, but require close monitoring

Most people would be better of buying stock of oil companies THAT HAVE RESERVES not ones that just process it. You can also but stock of oil field service companies like SLB and RIG (for a fun symbol)

COP, XOM, BP.

Keep it simple and invest in the oil tracking stock. It is an ETF and the ticker symbol is USO. This stock goes up and down with the price of crude oil mimicking its pricing pattern.

If you've been investing for a while, you can even write covered calls on it to pay your monthly gas bill.

Many reasons. Predictions are just predictions. Predictions are often wrong. Oil is expensive as it is and there is really not enough upside to be buying oil right now. Going to $200 in any commodities market is not a linear path, it is a path filled with ups and downs that only insiders can really trade successfully.

Are you really going to listen to a brokerage house analyst on a prediction of oil? Isn't that sort of a conflict of interest? Have you ever traded oil? Do you know how fast prices can move against you in a commodities market?

T. Boone Pickens, the utmost authority on oil states that oil is headed to $125 and topping at $150 in the near future. If you want to speculate in oil, you might as well buy a solid exploration company, or shares of Chevron. There is far more upside then buying the commodity itself. United States Oil (USO) is a horrible tracker. I have traded it and it does not even trade at parity of crude. Buying oil now is a speculators game. Here's a hint; I was buying crude at $55 per barrel in January of 2007.

There is far more opportunity in the markets right now to concentrate on something that is so overpriced.
