How do you know what market the stocks are on i.e. nasdaq, dow, nyse ??
i really just need to know what market microsoft, dell and yahoo are on I think its Nasdaq Help please
You are confused because you have failed to define your terms.
The word "market" in this case is too general. Do you mean "exchange" or do you mean "index?"
If you had asked "which market are these stocks 'traded' on?", then we would know you meant "exchange". But the question, "Which market are they on?" doesnt' make sense. The "Market" consists of all stocks.
The NYSE (stands for New York Stock EXCHANGE) and is an exchange. It is a place in New York where brokers and traders go to trade. There is also an NYSE index of 1500 NYSE listed stocks, which are the biggest and longest established and most prestigious companies in America.
The Dow (Dow Jones Industrial Average) is an AVERAGE of 30 of the biggest stocks on the NYSE. Some people still loosely refer to the Dow as "the market," but that would be between professionals who understand that is a proxy for how much the market is up or down at any given moment, and otherwise is a very narrow representation of the whole market.
The Nasdaq Composite Index is a index of the whole Nasdaq "market." These are generally newer, young upstart companies who haven't been around long enough or have the required capitalization to be listed on the Amex or NYSE exchanges. The Nasdaq 100 is the 100 biggest companies listed on the Nasdaq exhcange. The Nasdaq exchange doesn't exist so much as a physical location, as it is mostly a bunch of digital computer systems.
In 20 yrs of trading stocks, it was never "necessary" for me to know which exchange the stock was traded on. I merely enter the ticker symbol, and the order to buy or request for information is routed to whichever exchange or system contained the information.
Here is a listing for Dell on Yahoo Finance, and you can see that it is a Nasdaq listed stock, if that helps.
