PlasticTrees | How do you know when a business idea will work? |
My grandmother owns commercial property in a place called "old central city", it's basically a long street with a lot of antique stores. I can utilize her space @ no cost, but I'd have to remodel.
My ideas have been: pet groomer-my brother being the brains in that department, wedding planning services (which I KNOW I can cut prices of weddings in 1/2 by my tricks), pawn shop (but I'd need an alarm system installed) or one of those "ebay drop off" stores.
What is more lucrative in general? What can I do with 2k square feet?
I won't have to borrow any $ from any bank or person. |

I'd do the dog grooming or wedding planning. People will always have dogs. And people will always have weddings... and a low cost wedding? Man I wish we would have known of you!! heehee Here's some stuff I thought of - have a wedding dress bank where people can borrow clean dresses for their wedding. And have them in plus sizes - it is SO HARD to find a dress in a size other than 3 secondhand! |

MANAGEMENT
a B or C idea operated by A+ management is much more profitable than an A+ idea operated by B management.

Pawn is a tough business, and merely installing an alarm will not end the problems you are likely to face. And think about whether you want to deal with the kinds of people who typically use pawn shops: thieves and those very much down on their luck with no other sources of cash. It's depressing.
The wedding planning idea is nice but you should ask yourself, why do you need space to run a wedding planning business? I think a lot of pros do this from home. On the other hand, maybe your advantage here is that you have a 2,000 sq ft 'wedding showroom' that other wedding planners in the area do not have. If so, take advantage of that difference -- free space is hard to come by!
Dog grooming...like wedding planning there aren't really that many 'barriers to entry' -- not everyone can do it well, but certainly many can try, and that means competition. Walk around the immediate neighborhood and see if you see a lot of pets...and whether there are other grooming salons.
Most of all, think hard about this question: what do I ( and my access to this space) offer that others do not / can not? That will help you identify a competitive advantage. Without one, you may struggle, even with the offer of free space.
Good luck, let us know what you decide.

Elevating Your Business

Well, what do you LOVE doing. I'd see if there was a need for that and turn it into a business.
Why don't you try working for a pet groomer. And then work for a wedding planner. And then an ebay company. Get a feel for what is right for you and what you can make successful.
But to answer your first questions, no one ever knows when a business will succeed. However, you have a better chance of succeeding when you do what you love, know that lots of people need what you want to sell and create a plan. |

Your expenses are year 'round. This includes advertising and promotion, utilities and licenses. Weddings and dog grooming are very seasonal.
A pawn shop would make sense to me. BUT you need money for the items being pawned.
You could do check cashing and sales of merchandise. If you decide on the pawn shop OR any other business, go to a rather distant city or town with a business similar to the one you're thinking about opening.
Take the owner or manager out for lunch and dinner and ask LOTS of Qs!
Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it1

The old saying works here, find a need and fill the need. That is your recipe for success. Does the community need those services and if so to what degree? You need to understand what the want and make sure you can provide it. The wedding business isn't looking for cheap, they always are suspicious of that. Pet grooming is messy and it requires scheduling that can be a hassle along with dogs that bite and fleas not to mention, the owners can be a pain. I don't mean to rain on your parade but after owning more businesses than I care to remember I know it's fun to think about but can require quite a commitment. There are 2 times a business owner smiles, when they buy the business and when they sell it. The rest of the time can be quite trying. Find something you love to do besides filling the needs of the community and you will both win. Good luck. |

for pet grooming business- check first if there are many pets in area and see first if the owners are willing to put some money for it.
Is it a big deal when it comes to wedding in your place? check also the ages of the peolpe- marrying ages?
for pawnshop-hows the economy in the area?
goodluck! |
