How do you play the stock market?

Buy low, sell high.

Carefully. It IS a shark-run market, and you must know the full cost before trading, or you will generally lose.

The key word is "play". You don't play the markets, you invest. Money should not be played with. You need some knowledge before ever investing a cent. Don't just jump in based on heresay, the latest fad, or a friend's recommendation.
Take a few months and read business magazines, watch CNBC, talk with a trusted broker. These tips could be your best investment yet. It costs nothing to do except time.

i would read the following books first:

1. the intelligent investor

2. security analysis

3. a financial accounting text book

I am what would be termed a swing trader. I buy fundamentally sound stocks on dips, and then sell them when they rise. I usually hold stocks for between 1 to 3 weeks, but will hold a stock longer if it is fundamentally sound, and has the potential for a significant upside. Sometimes I will hold stocks for only a day or two. For instance I bought Apple for $155 on Monday and then sold it first thing Wednesday morning for $177.50. But I won't buy Apple again unless it drops below $150 because it won't bounce back as strongly on any future drops. In the last few months the stock market has been quite volatile, which means that I have to be quick in reacting to market moves. Also, in a down market you have to be quick in changing positions. You have to be ready to go where the momentum is. I start each day with a list of stocks that I will be watching, hoping to buy on significant dips. I will also have a list of stocks that I am holding that I want to sell on any up moves. Swing trading has worked quite well for me. I earn a return of between 50%-60%. I also have some long term positions and some positions in dividend stocks. Yes, you can make money playing the stock market, but the term "playing" might be misleading, you do have to do your homework.

dont ! unless you have a lot of knowledge behind you.

Just for fun though work out what shares you would buy in ..say..10 companies with a theoretical 10k in each- and see how much you get back in 1 week 1 month 1 year that will help you decide if its worth it.
And when to sell at best profit etc

I invested £10,000 in penny shares-(for real) I decided after a while to sell for what I bought them for - the next day they tripled !! agghhhhh !!!!

Stock market attracts various people from various disciplines. u cant determine the mood of the market in a particular time. One Sector will be attractive in one time but not the same, other time.

Fine, Playing in stock market does not going to earn u anything, unless otherwise u take a professional manager advice, eventhough it fails. Dont try to play in the market, but try to go with and along the market.

Markets, Generally speaking will be good one in Long Run but not in short run, Try to spot some companies ( especially good ones ), invest in the same while markets are in panic.
That will give good low rates u can even mint money while markets come up. Onceagain, Dont play in the market but try to be with it and along it.

Happy investing .,

"Playing the market" reminds me of a guy going to his local bookie and placing a bet on football or the horses.
"Investing in the market" is a lot different; but you can still lose money. Go to your local library and learn the basics of investing.
