How does 20 year old become financially independent with 120,000?
I have been lucky enough to inherit $120,000 from someone who was a professor. The money is now in a TIAA-Cref account earning about 2% annually. I'm a sophomore in college majoring in Finance with a minor in Chinese. I really want to grow this money so I can retire more than comfortably, say around 60. What should I do with it?!

You need to move the money into stock mutual funds. Over the last century the stock market indexes have averaged about 8% per year return when adjusted for inflation. (money double is purchasing power every 9 years) TIAA-CREF has such funds talk to them or transfer the money to a low cost mutual fund company like Vanguard or T. Rowe Price. Both have 800 numbers talk to their advisors and they can put you into a good mix of funds that suits your risk reward style and long term goals.

Congratulations. This windfall, if handled correctly could seriously improve your financial outlook for the rest of your life.
ok, I would do the following things in order
1) stop using credit cards.
2) get on a budget.
3) put 10K in a money market/savings account to be used as an emergency fund. This is only to be touched in the case of true emergencies. Car dieing that you need for work, getting laid off/fired unexpectedly, heater breaking in the middle of winter, etc
4) pay off any debt that you have

if you do just those 4, you will already be better off than 90% of the people in america.

5) figure out how much you are going to need to finish school. put that much in a separate account. only to be used for that. this you can split between savings and CD's since you know you won't be needind part of it for a year or two.

6) invest what you have left. If you aren't knowledgable about investing, learn or contact a financial advisor. Even if you only have 20K left after you do the above steps, if you invest that and get a 10% return, you will have over a million in the bank by the time you hit 60. Also, graduating from college with no debt will allow you to really pour a lot of your income into investing, which can make having several million by retirement very doable. Good luck.

You're wise to seek advice on how best to invest, but this isn't the place to get it.

You should focus on your education and starting a great career. $120k isn't really much money. A 2% return is not adequate for life. Inflation alone will erode the value of your money. You should diversify your wealth through sound stocks. Even CDs have a higher return than 2%.

(FSENX) SELECT ENERGY FUND.....(gasoline).
(OIBAX) WORLD BOND FUND (because the world wants to pay their debt to the USA- while the euro is strong and the
Dollar is weak . And thats what Bond repayment is all about.
on the amex ( OTT ) because it pays you a huge Dividend and
has a great history and a great future. Tiaa-Creff is managed well, it's just going through a short term bump in the road.
Stay the course with 15% - 20% in Tiaa-Creff or Franklin Income fund A (FKINX)
