Saving bonds are great! How it works it you put a little money down say $25 dollars on a bond that can grow, with interest, up to $50 dollars. Its purshased and builds interest over the years. The later you cash is the more its going to be. I'm not exactly sure on how much interest, but I did want to add that I'm a college student, my grandma and grandpa bought me a savings bond for every christmas and every birthday, I kept them all through high school, and paid for my books (nearly $900) for my first semester, with some of those savings bonds. I still have others at home building interest for next semester. They help so much.

Usually you buy them for half the price (i.e. you pay $500 for a $1000 savings bond). Then, depending on the interest rates at the time (they are quite low right now), the bond will mature to its full value in 10-15 years. If you take it out early, it will be worth less than what its face value it. If you leave it in too long, you get more than its face value.

it depends were you get your bond from

savings bond is a savings with intrest that you cant touch until your duration is up. % percentage depends on the bank has set at the time usally its higher on the longer period bonds. your letting the goverment barrow your money and give it back with interest and it wont be worth it unless you have a lot money you can spare and not miss because if you pull out of the bond before its up you will be penalised a percentage of your money and will loose your intrest.

savings bonds don't pay like they use to. My grandmother bought one at a bank and when she died, I inherited it. I cashed it in before it matured so I hardly go anything. I think she payed $100 in 1990. I cashed it in in 2003 and got $250. I heard its like 4 percent now interest. There are EE bonds and H bonds. I forget which one pays more.

Here is a good write- up discussing I Bonds, probably a better choice than EE bonds right now, both are issued by the US Treasury. They currently pay 4.28%.

I would start out with at least $2000.

The cost of shes these days is out of control, and 14 mos. from now... I hate to guess.

Fortunately, I bought my shes in 1957, so I'm good.
