How does the stock market affect me personally?

If you are invested, you will be affected by Greed and Fear.

If you are NOT invested and the market continues to fall, you will still be affected, but it will be with your jobs, communities, and property values. A falling market will reduce people's spending habits even more. When people spend less, jobs are lost, and when jobs are lost, homes go up for sale. Less spending, lost jobs, and further home values eroding spell MASSIVE TROUBLE for the average American.

Use Walmart as an example -
If it's stock started dropping in price, the sentiment of investors is that the company isn't doing as good it's competitors.
The CEOs of Walmart want to boost sales to bring the value of their company up, which would increase the value of it's stock.
So to boost sales, they lower the prices of "in store merchandise", trying to bring in more customers and steel away from competitors.
Their sales figures increase and show up in their quarterly reports.
Investors see from those reports, that the company has gotten it's act together and is now a major competitor in it's field (retail stores).
Investor sentiment changes for the positive, bringing in more buyers wanting to buy low and sell high for a profit, which in turn drives the price of the stock up.
Investors see that Walmart is on the rise and invest in lower priced companies that are in the same sector (retail stores), hoping to piggie-back on Walmart's success.

Stores competing against each other, try to outperform their counterparts, using the value of their stock as the score card.
They all have a different game plan.
One can lower their prices to increase their sales.
Others will benefit from the success of other companies, by having the ability to raise their merchandise costs, to stay in line with it's peers.

That would depend if you have money in the Stock Market. If you work and contributes to 401K - most likely you are contributed to the stock market(even if your elections are bonds or money market, they are all paper).

When one talk about the stock market, they usually think they are safe because they don't buy stocks that goes up or down or flat line. Well... let see, shall we!

If you work for a company that sell shares to get their startup capital, even if you don't own shares, your job will be effected in subtle ways

If you are a Starbuck fan, well... it is a public company, hence it issues stocks from time to time. If they get bought up by let say... McDonald! then you won't be having Starbuck coffee.

Oh, most recent, if you own a home with variable rates, your loan was chopped up, repackaged several time over and sell it to the French, which said they can't pin point what your house is worth.

The food you eat, the jewelry you have... before it gets to you, it was most likely traded in the Stocks/Commodities exchanges one time or another.

In conclusion, Stock market plays a vital role in today's society. It drives the economy and our every day lifes.

If you have a pension or retirement fund, a down stock market might make it impossible for your employer to keep it's promises. This is true even for government plans.

A down market makes people who invest feel poorer and makes them not want to spend money, including money that they might pay to you or your company. Look at all the layoffs recently.

It also makes it harder for businesses to raise money to expand and hire people.

It short, it leads to a general slowdown in economic activity.

it affects your emotion.

if it goes up you become happy because you make money

if it goes down you panic because you lose money and your wife might be very mad

The stock market will affect you if it crashes. If the market is in a free fall and everyone around you starts losing money you will have some pretty gloomy neighbours. Otherwise it shouldn't affect you unless you decide to participate in it.

It doesn't unless you invest in it.

Very little unless you trade stocks / have investments / 401K etc.
