How does the stock market work?

Well, that's kind of a big question. One extremely brief and simple answer is that companies sell bits of themselves (ownership of themselves) as stock shares, primarily to finance their debt. Typically, if people feel that a company is financially sound or has good potential for growth, they buy stock in it. If lots of people do that, the stock value increases. If people don't want to own pieces of a company any more, commonly because they don't have confidence in the company, or simply because they want to take their money and run, they sell their shares. If demand is low because people don't want the stock, its price decreases.

The stock market is a place where shares, or portions of companies, are bought and sold. The price of shares varies based on the amount bought, or sold, on a day. If people are buying shares in a company, the price will go up. If people are selling, the price will go down.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the average price of 30 of the largest and most widely held public companies in the United States and is used to measure day-by-day performance of the overall market.

The DJIA is used as a barometer for the overall financial health of the nation.

To buy shares in a company, you would contact a stock broker and work out an order. You will pay the current price plus fees to the broker.

people buy stock in a company.By buying stock the company receives money to increase output/capital etc. If the company does well the price of stock goes up and you make a profit by selling the stock on. If it dosent you lose money. The stock market is a general collective of all stock in the market.

Stocks (part ownership of a company) are issued on a market. These stocks are bought and sold every day on this market. As more people buy a stock, its price rises. As more people dump stock, this drives the price down.

When you sell your shares for more that you paid, you make money. If you sell for less, you lose money.

Its just like any other market. Buying and selling.

NERDGASM
People buy stocks and people sell stocks. The more people buy the more expensive the stock is. The more people sell the less the stock is.
