The stock market works as people buy and sell shares of publicly traded companies based on their need for more liquid assets as well as their beliefs about the current and future situations of the company and the economy at large.
An interesting theory i would suggest you look into is the efficient market hypothesis (see link in sources)

well the stock market is divided into three main fields which are the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones, and the SP 500. And they work with people buying shares or a piece of a company and then if that company grows, then your shares will grow too so in that way a person makes money. For example if a share of microsoft is $54 dollars but next year, their profit grows then maybe that share will cost $60 dollars, so now the person has made a profit of $6 dollars. |

Corrupt investment bankers have greedy public accountants and lying lawyers take a privately held company to a publicly owned company. Then cheating stock brokers sell that company's stock to unsuspecting investors who lose all their money while THEY all get multi-million dollar bonuses for scamming the american people out of their life savings.
