How is it that Good or Bad news can have such great effects upon the Stock Market?

In a stock market there are 4 kinds of players.
1) Bulls : They sieze each opportunity to push the stock up so they make more money.
2) Bears : They sieze each opportunity to drive the stock down so they make more money in the carnage.
3) Goats : They have a hearding tendency to follow either the Bear or the Bull
4) Tigers : They wait and watch and grab each and every opportunity to make money and are usually the long term investors.

When the overall economy is bad the bears spread false information and panic the Goats who start selling at a huge loss to the bears.

When the overall economy is good the bulls spread half truth information and lure the Goats who start buying at an expensive price from the bulls

So conclusion is Goats are the real idots who know nothing about stock market and treat it as an extention to their gambling addition.

hope this helps

The stock market is based on supply and demand, not how well the company is doing. The price of the stock is not related to the company's performance absolutely, but it is still a huge factor.

Over the long term, a company's stock price will be related to that company's performance. However, there may be high peaks and low dips throughout the year, month, week, or even day. These are largely related on the buyers' and sellers' perceptions of what will happen. If the Federal Reserve announces that the interest rates are going to be cut, then investors are more likely to take their money out of interest earning accounts, and invest them in the stock market. This influx of demand will increase the price of the stock. The reverse is also true.

When you have billions of shares going back and forth between millions of people, millions of small transactions result in huge effects.

There is usually an over reaction to news initially. Its effect varies upon the news content. Take 9/11 that had a big effect on airlines.

People tend to panic easily and overreact. There's an old saying, When the President gets a cold, the market sneezes.

Because it is human beings who are doing all the buying and selling. And it is those human beings who listen to the news, and react to the news. So good news or bad news will either comfort or scare the people who are buying and selling stock, bonds, derivatives, etc. and it is those human beings that ARE the market!

It is the "perception" of the value of stocks that causes the great effects or swings, not so much the "real" value any longer. Not many years ago, investors based the value of a stock by the strengths, current earnings, and projected future earnings of the company offering the stock. Then, a big flood of new investors entered the market thru 401k's, IRA's, and huge newly formed mutual fund companies and "unseasoned" investors entered the market. Factor in new investor impatience, tons of new speculators trying to make a quick buck, a huge instant media that loves to sell misery for ratings and profits, and we now have stocks that are valued much more on "news" than their "real value". This makes the seasoned investor frustrated, but creates great buying opportunities, thus... buy low, sell high. The newer "impatient" or easily scared investor panicks and sells, believing all the gloom and doom and thus...bought high and sold low. You watch, in a few years, the market will be doing well again and the "bought high, sell low" folks will get back in thinking they are really missing out and the cycle will start all over again. Moral of the story, "When you follow the herd, what do you step in?".
