How is it that the mutual fund managers with telephone number salaries are returning 10% while the stock ...?
traders on yahoo answers all claim to be making 30% ?
Are the fund running companies employing the wrong people?

The returns for individual investors are highly volatile. For everyone who boasts a 30-100% return (which any schmuck can say, how can anyone prove them wrong?), there are probably scores of other investors that have lost significant amounts but you're not going to hear from them boasting about that in Yahoo Answers.

Mutual fund managers are professionals that know what they are doing and have the resources to analyze markets and corporations that individual investors can't. They also deal with other people's money so of course they are going to focus on long-term growth rather that high risk plays for short-term gains.

You believe everything you read on Yahoo Answers?

If there were great stock analyst, they wouldn't be working for mutual fund companies.

Why would they work for a company and get paid $100,000 a year when they could make $1,000,000 a year in their own money?

If you ask me, I say company should be signing on stock analyst like they are million dollars baseball player.

first of all 10% a year is average and a very good return. Traders on yahoo answers that claim to make 30% a year are in risky investments. Yes it can be done, but are you willing to lose 30% of your assets also. The 10% return is average for US large cap equity stocks. Mutual Funds that make 30% are considered to be hedge funds, as they hedge there bets and are actively managed. There are some mutual funds that try to make 5-10% returns because they are matched up to a benchmark and are suppose to be conservative. So no, not all telephone number salaries should be replaced.. the average fund manager probably makes 130,000 dollars a year.. not exactly rich.

The mutual fund managers do make seven figure salaries. The larger the mutual fund size, the more difficult it is to beat the market and the comparable index. It's simply too hard to invest the huge sums of money that the larger funds have to make a difference in the mutual fund stock price. Some mutual fund managers run concentrated portfolios, but like Bill Miller of Legg Mason, if you are in the wrong sectors, you can dramatically underperform.

Unlike hedge funds, mutual funds have restrictions on how much they can own of a particular company and their use of leverage. Hedge funds are free to pursue whatever strategy they want and they take huge risks. Investors in hedge funds have to be sophisticated and must tie their money up for long periods. Mutual fund managers don't have that luxury and usually have to keep money uninvested in order to meet daily redemptions.

1) The Mutual Fund Managers cannot risks billions like some of the Very Small Portfolio Managers like myself risking barely a few millions.
2) Yes.

Coca-Cola cannot afford a billion in a Banana beverage because they could lose and their stock would drop.

Lance Collins can afford $1,000,000.00 in a Banana beverage because it's his own money and his company is private.

He did that exactly from his basement in California in 2000 and by 2003 his banana beverage could be purchased anywhere in the United States of America. by 2004 he expanded to Asia, Europe and South America.

On February 1, 2007, Coca-Cola announced it was purchasing Fuze Beverage, with financial details not disclosed

the market is somewhat "perfect" it's hard to be the overall average of market gains.
