How long would it take a decent trader to turn $50k to $100k?
If the guy is good at technical and fundamental analysis. Taking into account taxes too. Asume that the person has another job and is making $100k in that. What do you have to think about in terms of tax and commisions?
Additional Details
*guy/gal is good

commissions won't be anything to worry about.. So many brokers offer $10 or less.

lets put it this way... you have to earn about $85,000 on your $50k, so that after they take 40% of the $85k away for taxes, you'll have your extra $50k...

so you need to turn $50k into $85k in one year? to do that, you need to earn an *Average* return of only 0.393% each day!

0.393% of an $80 stock is only 31 cents... of course some days you'll be up 2%, and some days you'll be down 2%...

you said the guy/gal is good at both technical & fundamental... so earning an average of only 1.98% each week should be a piece of cake!

People do this... all the time. It becomes more difficult when you have huge amounts of money, and that is partly why regular mutual funds don't earn crazy returns... it is hard to be nimble when you're driving a big ol' semi full of cash..

but for little guys with only $50k or so, nimbleness is so easy, we have to be careful not to get to crazy about moving in & out all the time.

Swing trading is thing... buying a stock for a week or three.. the market makes little swings back & forth and most stocks follow the market. pay attention every day... but don't Trade every day.

If you are good and right, maybe two months. I saw Garmin double in price in a couple of months then cut its price by 1/2 in another couple. But that invovles thating a great deal of risk. If you are not right but still good you could loose guite a portion of your 50k.

An eyeblink if he is using CFD's or some other highly leveraged derivatives at 100-1 etc.

What I call a decent trader is a competent investor. So 6 years, which is the rate at which an investment doubles at the average stockmarket return of 12%

Analyzing is important but be careful during a downward trend such that we are in. Those tools will allow you to find an under valued stock. Look for lower P/E ratios for that.

In terms of turning 50K to 100K that is a 100% return, and everyone would only dream of that. To do that in the short run your going to have to gamble. I've been taught and learned myself that diversification is the safest bet. With your head on your shoulders I would say 5 years at the least.
