ALD | How low could the U.S. stock market go? Can it drop to 0? |
Nov.12th 2008...Dow Jones is 8282.66...the Nasdaq is 1499.21...the S&P 500 is 852.30 as of this writing. Is it conceivable that these numbers could ever drop to zero? And if they did, what would happen? Requesting serious opinions. Thx. |

It won't drop to zero, but it can go a lot lower than it is now. Back in the depression the Dow Jones was down to about 40. If enough businesses go bankrupt, the survivors will have an increased share of the market and will begin to grow stronger. Like the survival of the fittest in evolution. |

Contemplating your question has given me a headache, I now have to go throw my financial support behind Bayer. So at least they won't go to zero this week. |

what?

it is completely impossible that any market index could ever drop to zero.
the people who make the index can always change the stocks that compose the index, so the kick bad companies out, and bring in new, healthy companies. |

Zero would be somewhat improbable. But then again who would have guessed 10 years ago that GM would be selling at $3.00 a share? Or AIG at $2.00 or FNM at $0.68. I guess zero is not beyond the relm of possibility. What would happen? We will probably all be wishing we were Amish. |

I could see it at 2,000. Not zero.. |

Extremely unlikely that the stock market would drop to 0. However, the dow could realistically drop another thousand points. The market will remain in flux probably until the end of the year until the big retailers report their Christmas revenue. If it is low, which most suspect will happen, the market could very well go that low. What will indicate a possible end of this slide is sustained positive growth in home sales and new homes. plus a reduction in foreclosures. |

No. Their assets have real property value.
There is one exception. When the Lord returns, nothing material will matter. On that day things of this earth will be of no value. |
