Depends on what you mean by a dime and a dollar. If you are referring to how many 10 cent pieces are required to equal the same legal value as a USD 1 dollar bill. Then you would need 10. However if you were also able to recuperate the cost of producing the dime and or dollar bill, you would have to refer to the US Mint ( http://www.usmint.gov/faqs/circulating_coins/index.cfm?flash=yes&action=faq_circulating_coin ) and the current market price of copper and nickel metals. |

Here's why:
Take both of your hands and count your fingers on one hand and do the same with the other. You get 10 fingers, right? But that doesn't convey the dimes, it conveys the pennies. So, the one whole hand is the dime and the other whole hand is the dime.
