based on what and how you asking, I guess you have no experience, nor did you do to much of research on this topic.
So I would say, you will end up loosing your 400 pounds.
To not let it stand like that, I give you some insight:
There are different ways to trade. Basically, depending on the timeframe. We call it long term, mid term and short term.
You can also cut that down to day trading and position trading.
The difference is, a day trader buys and sell the same stock in the same day (trading session), while the position trader will hold the stock for days, weeks, months or years.
I am pretty sure, you are looking to buy one stock, and hold it for one year, and your question is, how much you can expect to gain. Like that its impossible to answer for the simple reason: nobody knows the future, even less in a one year timeframe of a single stock. The most famous stocks are known to go up steady in a big timeframe, but in a one year time frame there is no guarantee.
Buy and forget is thus not a good strategy for a single stock.
You could consider a managed stock fund offered by most banks. They can also give you a number of what you can expect in one year based on past performance. Still they will not guarantee, if its a pure stock speculation investment.
I think, the most fun it is if you do it yourself. Like pick a stock, go long or short (buy or sell) and watch it. If it goes wrong way, abandon it and pick another trade.
Its a huge difference in this two methods of "buy and forget" or actually trading the stock market - or as you refer to it "investing".
Go yo YouTube and type in "day trading" (stocks).
You will be amazed. There you will also see some numbers.
remember, thats about get in and out of the market in the same day. But then, maybe thats not what you are looking for, as most full time jobs will not allow you to day trade time wise.
Also, with such a small amount its probably useless.
There is a minimum of 5000 US$ to open an account with a broker to trade stocks. So with 400 pounds your only option would be invest it with your bank, and thats not the same like with a stock broker.
To big of a topic to cover that full story here. Do some research, lot of stuff on the internet about this topic.
have fun ! |

Decide a target.......say 3% .....buy index stocks or other fundamentally sound stocks and sell at 3% + brokarage etc above your buying price...... You will be turning over your capital many times and your earning will depend on your average days per trade.
Do not overbuy.
Since you will be investing in fundamentally sound stocks, no need to make a stop loss. Wait till your target is achieved.
If the stock seems to be moving upwords rather fast, sell only a part of stock at the target price and then continue selling in small lots while it goes up.
I had bought 125 RIIL at 572.....It went down to 423 but i waited patiently.......When it stared rising above my target I sold in small lots of ten....... Sold the last lot of 15 at 2365.75..........It is still increasing.
This may not be a very lucrative strategy but it sure is a safe one!
All the best! |

If you can answer the question, "how long is a piece of string", then I will answer your question !!
But seriously, if you expect to lose all your investment, then that is a good starting point. For we ordinary folk, the stock market is not the place to invest.
Mojack has it right - do it for fun only !! |

it all depens how much you got. my friend invested $1000 usd in stock and made $50,000. You can get lucky and make a profit or you can lose. I got $159 from the coca cola company once. I bought 5 shares and sold them. |
