actually, i have a lot. and i'm 66.
because i saved 15% for many years in a 401k.
and worked at bank of america, not worldcom.
btw, some have mentioned "no credit cards".
i use one all the time.
but always pay it off.
i get 3% back on gasoline i purchase, and 1% back on everything else.
so i make a profit on mine. |

There is no norm. Lifestyle, number of kids, college loans, salaries, etc, etc.
Live within your means. Are those newer cars more important than your retirement account or college funds. It is all a give and take situation.
Dave Ramsey on FBN - Fox Business News would be very helpful. Each person is unique but there are helpful guidelines. $1000 emergency fund. 2-6 months of quick savings. Plan to pay off mortgage early. NO credit card debt, etc, etc. |

Im 68 years old worked for Ford Motor Company for 30 Years. I made about $100,000 a year and I have a big family.
I retired 5 years ago and I make about $45,000 in pension and SS. I once had about $1,000,000 in savings but I invested 600,000 in building my dream home. It's now worth about $1,000,000. I have two $40,000 cars that I pated in cash. I've never had a credit card to my name and never had a mortgage. I have about $300,000 in savings.
Why didn't you give us your age, so we can tell you what we had at your age ,or what you probably should have for your age? |

Almost 22 years old (21 right now .. 22 in a few months) - $42,000 in the bank getting 3.75%, ~$7000 in my stock (investment non trading) portfolio , ~$2000 invested in gold, $3000 in tbills.
and no debt - car is paid off , credit cards paid off every month
Most of my earnings was from trading stocks and working for the last 2 years. My advice if you know enough finance , don't go mutual funds ... most mutual funds under perform the market as you already know. and TRADE the market ... don't invest ... if your good and have a good understand of price action then you will make more money then you lose and therefore end up with positive results. |

Three years ago, I had a little over $40,000 in savings, and no debt. My cars were paid off and my rent was less than $600 per month (for a really nice apartment). I worked hard, worked out at the gym, and still partied frequently and with great style.
I got married, had two children, and was then unemployed for two years. (I also co-signed for my wife's student loans, about $20,000.)
I am now 37 years old and am almost penniless - about $3,000 in savings, plus her student loans - so negative $17,000 net. (I also work in Finance, as an Equities Analyst). Back to the drawing board!! |
