First, don't sell for less than you bought and you won't lose anything.
Second, if you do sell at a loss you can harvest those losses against any future gains and offset paying capital gains tax, 100% legal.
Third, the market is awesome for buying right now, it will go up, it will go up a lot, and many people will get rich.
Fourth, don't act surprised, markets and economies go up and down, and you knew the risks in giving someone else your cash (investing). You will be fine soon!!! Though we all will be waiting a little while :)

The 17 year old talking about 'wall street smarts' and 'instinct' is funny.

Anyhow, I personally am down about 20% over all my accounts, but its mainly from my mutual funds (60% of my portfolio) taking a bit of a dive the past 2 months. My stock portfiolo is doing fine, Im actually up about 15% there, but its mainly cause I have have been buying A LOT (for me) in this 'time of crisis' while people are all in panic.

Im not worried at all, I think in 5 years I will have at least doubled my money with the investments I have currently (heavy buying at the lows we are seeing currently with GOOD solid companies, and a couple high risk ones thrown in as well).

good luck, remember its not lost till you sell it or it gets a Q added to the end :)

ps. im fully long right now stupid but i think it will pay off in the next month or 2... esp. GOLD! past couple days tho ive been down over 15%!!! beacuse i just keep buying while my stocks keep plummiting hey dont forget grahams rules..

Probably 20-25%. My retirement accounts have had that sickening roller coaster look...one jumped to a high earlier this year (so much so I noticed), then recently plummeted 50%. Two other retirement accounts have held fairly steady.

My non-retirement accounts are down 15%-20% and would be down less if I didn't have some items affected directly by recent Hurricanes.

This weekend, I plan to get my records out and figure out my cumulative investment in the various retirement plans. Knowing that the worst account, say, had an investment of $25,000, had grown from $50,000 to $100,000 in the past 5 years and then backslid to $50,000 isn't as painful as thinking it's $100,000 and slid to $50,000. (It would if I was retired.) My gut says this slide is worse than the last one in 2001/2002, but this too will pass.

Yeah, I've taken some losses which doesn't feel too great. Just make sure to dollar cost average and you can benefit from all of this. Best wishes!
