Consider the Vanguard Prime Money Market Fund with a current compound yield of ~5.05% APR.

If you are in a high tax bracket you may prefer their tax exempt money market funds:

Sometimes other institutions will have a higher teaser rate, but Vanguard tends to have the highest yields I've found over the long run. (Vanguard money markets are not FDIC insured, however.)

Article on teaser rates:

ING and HSBC often have rates close to Vanguard, and most of their products are FDIC insured. Bankrate.com provides links to CD's with high interest rates. You can check these at the following links:

(If you are investing for a long period of time and are willing to accept some volatility, you should consider putting some money into no-load low-expense mutual funds. These are not guaranteed, but over the long run produce much higher returns.)

You want it to be safe. How about a short term CD. You get better rates at a Credit Union than a bank.

Short term, low risk investment is putting it in an online savings account for 4.75% APY (emigrantdirect.com). This way it is still liquid (i.e. you still have access to it), and it's still earning a decent return (beating inflation) while you decide what to do with it for the long term.

What's short term? If your going to need it in the near future go with a 3 or 6 month CD at the best rate you can get. Above poster are right. Check out bankrate.com for research.

If you know when you'll need the money, a short term CD maturing at the time you'll need the cash may be a good idea. If you're not sure when you'll need the money, a money market fund that invests only in U.S. Treasury securities would be a reasonable choice. None of these investments will yield high returns, but the point of investing short term is to protect your money from loss.

I have been doing this for the past one year and earned (& still earning) daily , you just need to research and also dive in & get your feet wet if you really want to see the income. Go to www.G1G4.net (guest code:60209), watch the movie & listen to the conference calls, some major changes in people's lives. Good luck!

If I had $40k, then I would put it towards property like a condo or a time share.
