How should I invest my inheritance?
I am about to turn 25 and will inherit about $550K from a trust. I want to explore wealth management options in addition to reinvesting the inheritance with the company that currently handles the trust. The catch: The inheritance is only half of the trust and the other half remains with the current company for 5 more years (until I turn 30).

what?
For 550k, you really don't need "wealth management."

First, pay off any debts that you may have. Second, if you haven't already, consider buying a house - preferably one that costs considerably LESS than 550k. Third, talk to an investment adviser about investing the remainder of the money in a small or micro cap mutual funds or ETFs (these have had the best returns: historically about 13-15% per year, and you have enough time ahead of you to rid out any market instability, and get the good returns that these types of companies will offer in the long run).

The good news is that you get another bite at the apple. If you invest in the small cap funds, you should be able to double your money before you get the next disbursement. If you use 300k to buy a house and pay off debt, and let the other 250k grow aggressively, then you could have more than a million liquid for your 30th birthday. If you leave that in investments like I've suggested, then when you're 40 you could afford to cash it out and live on interest for the rest of your life, which means that you would be able to do pretty much anything that you want for the next 40-50 years.

I would say first pay off ALL of your debts in full. After that I would go face to face with investment advisers and talk with them. That much money you don't want to just put it anywhere. See which ones make you feel comfortable that they won't lead you wrong. Make sure that you read books about what ever they say and understand what they are telling you so you know they are not blowing smoke in front of your eyes. Good luck.

I would highly recommend you interview a couple of money managers and go with one you trust. That is too much money to take advice off the internet blogs.

Go to Dave Ramsey's website and click on "ELP" and there should be a list of advisors in your area that have the heart is a teacher.

For that amount of money an investment adviser would be a smart idea. Look in the phone book, ask friends for a referral. Contact your state securities regulation agency for advisers in your area. Request a copy of their ADV which is their disclosure statement explaining their background, how they do business and their fees. Pay close attention to their fees. You also might check them out at the brokercheck link at finra.org.

A good financial advisor would be high on my list. Be sure to thoroughly check them out...references, education, degrees, etc....)
Then I'd ask about those programs you can invest part of that $ in that is put with 3 or 4 other investors. My friend did this a year or so ago. He put $125k with several others to finance a well known chain restaurant in Dallas. They own the new building so the franchisee pays them rent. Plus they get a point or two from gross revenues. He gets between 23k and 28k every 1/4. I believe he's already gotten his investment $ back. There are folks that put these programs together for multiple investors. Ask....verify....check it out...whatever you decide to do.... Remember the old saying, "The opportunity of a lifetime usually comes about once a month!" Don't rush into things.....and thank your benefactor for the wisdom to spread out the trust... You wisdom, experience and education will be much more defined and enriched in 5 more years.......
Like Mark twain once said, "When I was 18, I thought my father was the dumbest man on earth. When I was 21, I was amazed at how smart my father had become in three short years!"

If you are seriously want to "invest" your money, you should first consider to spend a small amount of the money to get you a resound knowledge about the "investment" itself. Investments involve high degree of RISK (and Profit Return; of course). There are a lot of OPPORTUNITIES (and THREAT as well) in the Investment World. There are investments that sounds good but actually a SCAM. Always do a lot of research BEFORE involve into anything. Ask the opinion of others (related to the stuff) as well. Upgrade your knowledge in the investment fields every day if possible. When the time comes, you yourself will know the type of investment that you want to get involve with. Remember, BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY... Wish you all the best!
