Get a back copy of Money or Kiplingers that rates stockbrokers.
I used Charles Schwab. Trades cost $12

There are some a bit cheaper and many more expensive.
Those 2 magazines along with Smart Money magazine will help educate you BEFORE you buy stocks. The magazines are available at most book stores, libraries, and by subscription. Part of their magazines is available online. |

4 choices and the answer to your question is yes and no.
You may want help to get started or at least start reading some books. Usually people with ~$0-$50,000 trade with choice 1 or 2. Accounts $50,000 to $500,000 usually go with choice 3 and larger accounts normally go to Investment advisors Choice 4. I'm not saying this is always the case nut, it's not a bad rule of thumb.
1) Do it Yourself (DIY) - E-trade, Scottrade, Ameritrade, etc.
2) Get a discount Broker - Schwabb, H&R Block,
3) Full Service Broker - Raymond James, Merrill Lynch
4) Get an Investment advisor to manage your money for you. |

You don't have to have a stockbroker to buy stocks. You can sometimes buy them directly from the company that issues the stock. But it's a whole lot easier to buy stocks if you go through a stockbroker, because the stockbroker can buy them for you on the stock exchanges. (You, as an individual investor, are not allowed to trade directly on an exchange.) You don't need to pay the stockbroker a lot if you use an online discount broker. But if you want a lot of services, you might want to hire a full service broker. |

You do need a broker to buy the stock of many companies. You do NOT need a broker to buy the stock of many other companies. They have a DRIP (Dividend ReInvestment Plan). Some DRIPs require to use a broker to buy the initial shares, but some plans allow you to buy the first and all other shares directly from the plan. Check the web site of the companies you are interested in. The site usually tell about the DRI plan or at least has a phone number to contact their investor relations department. |

You do not need a stock broker but you do need to have a brokerage account.
Typically a stock broker is someone to help you place your trades or someone to help manage your account.
Whether or not you use a stock broker you will need to have a brokerage account. This can be at a service house or with an onlne broker like scott trade or fidelity. Try picking up the book, Investing for Dummies as your first read. It will easily get you through most of your initial questions.

honestly, you're probably going to WANT to get a stock broker 'cause there's alot of crap to know and learn and if you don't know how to buy stock, you probably would need one. However, they get commision I'm pretty sure. |

you dnt exactly need a stock broker, you can buy n sell stocks online..... example..... Reliancemoney, icicidirect, sharekhan, Indiabulls... open a demat ac wid any of them and u can start trading online. |
