YOu do your research.

Read books like popular science/popular mechanics, etc and look for trends that are plausible. Then look for some companies that specialize in these areas, and invest in the best ones.

Another good thing to do is read two of Peter Lynch's books "One Up On Wall Street" and "Beating The Street". He details in his book how he used common sense to turn Fidelity's Magellan fund into one of America's biggest and best. He bought little known companies which went on to become well known companies.

I've worked in the investment industry for many years, and I've had many people come up to me and say that they could make more money than I can. I took many people up on their offer, and less than 5% of these people have actually beaten me (and I'm no world beater - it just shows that people aren't as smart as they think they are)

You are fodder for bulletin boards that puport to tell you exactly this but I have to tell you that they are scams by and large.

The facts: Letting out information about a publically traded company performance outside of public announcements is illegal so either complete strangers are willing to break the law for no personal gain in order to help you or they are lying.

Equally hoping that the CEO of a parachute company will tip you off before he goes public? Hmm let me think you hav eto buy shares before you can benefit from a price rise. You can't legally get in at the juicy end of an IPO unless you are rich and invited. It's not going to happen.

Girlfriends in board rooms huh? Nice idea but would you know how to interpret the knowledge you gleaned? A million in extra sales this quarter is only good if the analysts weren't expecting 2 million.

The only way to do it from your position without breaking the bank is to look at consumer trends like Apple and Microsoft. It didn't take a mastermind (okay I never bought but I have learned my lesson) to spot that these guys were on a steep trajectory. What wasn't clear was how sustainable that was but hindsight shows that they were sustainable.

So the simple answer is that you have to prepare to be there when the official announcements are made availabel, read them, interpret them and place you bets just like everyone else does.

You really can't find a stock BEFORE it skyrockets (which is every amateur's dream and subsequent nightmare), but you can get into one THE MOMENT it starts moving up on high volume - the strategy called buying breakouts.

You are welcome to join our stock picking group at:

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/TradingZoom/

that focuses on this strategy.

CPSL, JRJC, and KUN are the most recent examples of member trades.

Enter a time machine and set it for one year in the future. Exit your time machine and buy a wall street journal. Then travel back in time to the present. Compare the stock prices then and now. Put all your money into the stock that will rise the most in the next year. Simple, eh?

I think you just have to look for stocks that are kinda local to your area. It's just really difficult to get in on something that's about to skyrocket unless you know the company intimately.

When I'm trying to make quicker money, I ask around about small companies in my area, such as a local parachute manufacturer. I asked him if the company is traded publicly and how they sell their parachutes. Well, the good news was that their business is totally government contracts. The bad news was that the company is privately owned and has no intent to issues stocks in the future. But if they ever do, and I am in contact with the owner, I might then have a great advantage.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you basically have to look for IPO's. Initial public offerings. Often those are rather new local banks that want to expand soon. They tend to do this a lot. But they first offer the stocks to depositors, or people who have accounts with them.

To do what Dave M advises is unrealistic.
The only reason a Co's shares suddenly sky rocket is because it has announced surprisingly good results it its prospects are now seen in a new light.

The people who take advantage of this and buy just before, are those with inside information. Find a girl friend who takes the minutes at the board meetings of a quoted company.
