How to find out what stocks are in a mutual fund?
Which website has the best information about what mutual fund has what stocks?

Also, what is the best site for researching mutual funds?

Thanks!

Money central at msn gives the top 25 holdings in their research...more than most.
http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/home.asp
Go up to the tab for " funds".... and when you get a quote, along the side is a tab for top 25 holdings.
Another great site is " morningstar"...just put it in your " search" box and it will come up.

Download a prospectus from the mutual fund website. Mornngstar.com is a good site for research. It will give you the top 25 holdings.

At moneycentral, at yahoo/finance and/or at morningstar...
If you're getting " involved" with your funds/investments, get real familiar with the morningstar site...a lot of useful stuff there...
Click on " tools" and then on their " instant x-ray" for one...get a nice breakdown of what your fund(s) hold , watch it to make sure you don't get too heavy in one sector ( percentage- wise)

Morningstar.com has lots of info. You can look up the fund's annual/quarterly reports at the SEC website or at the fund company's website.

One of the inherent weaknesses to mutual funds is knowing exactly where the money is. The reality is that you only know for sure where your money is during the reporting time period. Often this is window dressing as right after the reports are released, the fund managers are within their rights to adjust their holdings, so what you see listed may well not be what they hold at all. You only know what they hold for one day per quarter.

About the only one's you really know for sure are the index funds as they are not actively managed, but instead based on a fixed percentage of a representative sampling.

Best sites: Morning Star/Wall Street Journal.

On yahoo/finance, when you enter the fund symbol in the quote box...alongside the quote info are tabs for : "holdings", " performance" etc....if you click on holdings, the top ten stocks in your fund will come up....and there is a nice touch to it because at the bottom of the list is a line that says " quotes for top ten stocks"...if you click on that you will get the current price for those stocks...during the trading day it's an easy way to get an idea of what the fund is going to do at the end of the day....( fund prices only update after the day is over )
