How to invest 1,000?
I am 18 and I got it as a gift. I am not sure about stocks, because they are not doing so well right now, and the returns are on average only 10%. What should I invest it in?

depends on your risk level.
10% is actually a very high ROI. (return on investment)
Mutual funds are usually around 4-7% ROI depending on risk level, stocks are hit or miss. CD's for 1000.00 is usually around 3.5-5%.
Best bet place in a mutual fund and forget about it. Investment is putting your money towards somehting that will likely over time make more money. Anything that goes down in value over time is not an investment, so dont buy a car or anything that has a fluctuing value such as collectables.
Or just place the whole amount on the Red at the roulette table. 47/47% odds.. (not truly 50/50 due to the two green 0's)

Hold on....whatever you do don't go with the answer 'on a car'..........depreciation on a car is horrendous.

I would put it in a ROTH IRA, or IRA. They say you should put $500 personal money in it a year. I went with American Funds. Cheap rate.

Mac ... "The D" gave you the best advice. Put the money in a mutual fund and forget it. American funds are typically terrific, but expensive. Take a look at Vanguard.com for the lowest investment fees. yeah, you gotta pay them to invest your money.

Truly, if you have any earned income, put the money in a Roth IRA. If you have zero earned income, forget the IRA and just open a regular brokerage account. Call Vanguard and ask their advice. They will walk you through it. And, no, I don't work for Vanguard ... :)
Good luck!

At your age I'd look for an insurance annuity without a life insurance policy. They have them that are compounded quarterly and annually, and some are even tax free. There is a lot to be said for starting a plan for long term financial growth at an early age.

Many annuities have a thing setup where you can use up to 49% of the working capatial for 10 months of the year, and still recieve the full dividend amount if it is paid up for those two months.

By law these type of accounts must be above the prime lending rate, and in a few years you can learn how to draw out a portion of your savings to buy a fixer up home, repair it, sell it, and return the working capatol plus the profits of your labors and still have a good time doing it.
I use this as an example, but you will need to find your own strengths... If you are a reader then pickup a copy of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

What a great time to buy stocks! Or do you want to buy them when they average 12% and pay more. Invest your $1000 wisely with help from a professional. Please see my profile.
