How to invest $100,000 over a short time frame?
I am in contract to sell my old home in Feb-08. After closing costs, my net gain figures to be approx. $100,000. I will be moving into a new home around July-08 - as such, my previous net gain will be applied as a down payment for the new home.

My question is this - how do I best invest the $100,000 over the span of 6 months (Feb-July)? Mind you, I'd still need at least $100,000 when moving into the new home.

You are not going to get 10% on any safe investment in 6 months. See this link:
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus/scottburns/columns/2007/stories/DN-burns_28bus.ART.State.Edition1.3168bd3.html

For a safe investment, consider the Vanguard Prime Money Market Fund with a current compound yield of ~4.90% APR. https://flagship.vanguard.com/VGApp/hnw/FundsSnapshot?FundId=0030&FundIntExt=INT

If you are in a high tax bracket you may prefer their tax exempt money market funds: https://flagship.vanguard.com/VGApp/hnw/FundsByType

Sometimes other institutions will have a higher teaser rate, but Vanguard tends to have the highest yields I've found over the long run. (Vanguard money markets are not FDIC insured, however.)

Article on teaser rates: http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/banks-advertised-rates-dont-always/story.aspx?guid=%7B0A13B6E2-FFB2-4E2B-BD42-E2D1E01C52E5%7D

ING and HSBC often have rates close to Vanguard, and most of their products are FDIC insured. Bankrate.com provides links to CD's with high interest rates. You can check these at the following links: http://home.ingdirect.com/ http://www.us.hsbc.com/1/2/3/personal/savings?code=husa http://www.bankrate.com/

(If you are investing for a long period of time and are willing to accept some volatility, you should consider putting some money into no-load low-expense mutual funds. These are not guaranteed, but over the long run produce much higher returns.)

Try putting it into a Certificate of deposit, you will get a small yield but higher than a standard savings account

you can also try a money market account as well

To ensure you retain your $100K and also make some income (though not necessarily 10%), invest into any of the money market instruments such as Certificates of Deposit, Banker's Acceptance, Treasury Bills and Commercial Paper.

10%? Never happen if you want 100% safety. Check banks in your area for CD rates. Otherwise put it on red on roulette wheel.

I agree wit hthe other answerer... and keep in mind that there are some money market funds that have a better gain for a larger minimum deposit. You might want to see what are the highest quality funds you can get into for $100,000. I know Vanguard has some funds like this, check them out.

Real estate is a good idea and also stocks. Take a look at http://goldenbullstocks.com i use them and they are great.

if you have nerves of steel you could scalp-trade coffee in the futures market, buy 25 contracts and every penny movement is $375 bucks...wait for three cents ($1125 profit per contract) up times 25 contracts is approx $28,125 a 28%+ return on your investment....or not....wish i had fat cash to trade futures with but no...im stuck trading in the boring a_s stock market...where i have no access to leverage
