Start by asking your self a number of questions:
What is you plan, long term capital appreciation? you want to tap on the growth of some emerging markets?
What is your risk tolerance?
What is the rate of return you expect for your investments?

Then start by searching for funds that are in line with your goals and objectives.
To know a good fund, you can look for the rating, track record or history of performance and the major holding in the fund and how diversified is the fund i.e how many class of assets that the fund holds Equity, Bonds RE etc.

There are different firms that collect money from investors and put in that money into a collection of different stocks. Go to the website of any company doing such things, like , Max NewYork Life, HDFC, Bharati AXA etc. There you will have the number of the guy who you can contact for investing in mutual funds. You can either call them or you can give your details and have them call you.

The process of investing is quiet easy. You give them some documents and a cheque they need and you will have your MF policy ready.

A good mutual fund is one that has shown consistent returns over a period of time. All the statistics can be respectively found in the website of the MF company.

If you want to look at a comparision of various funds performance, visit www.moneycontrol.com.

I would suggest you to avoid sectorial funds.

Any broker in your area will help you in investing in M F. You have to fill up a form and send it to the MF company. The broker will do this for you. you don't have to pay broker.

The MF funds take money from individual investors and invest it in Shares, Debt Market and other securities. As thy have large funds the investments are in various securities in different industries ,this reduces the risk of loss but that does not mean that the funds the funds will not make losses.

You can choose a MF company after checking its past performance ( It is not 100% )

IT is good to invest in MF with dif. options and not in one type of fund.
