As you say £15,000 I am assuming you are in the UK.

At the moment steer clear of the stock market until it steadies a little. Yes, you can make money on the market, but it is also very easy for a beginner to lose it. You would really need to study the market for a considerable time to get the hang of things.

Have a look around at the financial pages of the 'heavy' papers at the weekend (Daily Telegraph is very good) and see what is on offer.

If you approach your bank they will welcome you with open arms, BUT this does not mean you will get the best response because they will guide you towards one of their own products - they cannot offer you anything outside their immediate remit. They need your money desperately at the moment as banking shares are way, way down.

So, stay independent, look at the financial pages for a couple of weeks until you get the hang of it. Make your own selection. In all things financial you should rely on your judgement alone. It is your money- take care of it.

Best of luck.

You mean aside from a university education? (Really, I'd put it there first).

A dividend-paying, solid growth company like a great bank or multinational like Johnson and Johnson. Pick three or four of these to diversify. Then just collect the dividends every four months for cashflow. You can reinvest the cashflow into the same companies, or pick new ones.

have a chat to your bank about isas etc... depends when you may need the cash back and at what notice etc but i appreciate your bravery about asking here... does that mean the best answer is where the money goes as i vote for a blowout weekend of booze and girls :)
