Ok, shares are simply a tiny piece of a company that somebody called an investor buys. once you own one share of the company, you own a part of that company. The stock market is exactly like a marketplace where investors buy and sell shares. Once a share is bought, that money goes to the company which is then used to buy machinery, offices, salary etc...
The stockmarket originally was a meeting place where business men sold parts of their businesses but with the introduction of technology, this can now be done over the phone and internet. All of the information about who owns what is kept on a database as it would be far too much work to keep writing it all down as there are over 3000 companies listed on the stock market with thousands of traders selling and buying every hour.
The price of shares can go up and down depending on the current events in the world. For instance, say a world war breaks out, the companies in the defence and aeronautics section would most likely see a rise in their share prices as more countries would be buying their products such a tanks, planes and bulletproof vests. The share price is a reflection on how good a company is doing and it shows what the company is valued at. this is where people make the big money as they think that they find a company that has been undervalued so buy lots and lots of shares. When everyone catches on, the share prices increase and the original buyer sells for lots of money and makes a profit.
Its complicated business but I tried to answer the question as simply as I could. I recomend buying a book called HOW THE STOCKMARKET WORKS if you are really interested. If not, then I have explained the extreme basics to you. |

The stock market is like any other market (even EBAY) It is a place that has been set up with the appropriate rules and procedures in order that participants can buy and sell shares knowing that they will get delivery and payment. |

There are two parts to the stock market. The primary market and the secondary market. The secondary market is what most people think of when they hear the stock market and it is what is reported on the news everyday.
Primary Market:
- A company decides they need some cash.
- The company works with investment bankers to create an initial stock offering.
- The investment bankers market the stock directly to large investors and insitutions (not through the stock exchanges).
- The company gets the money they needed and the investors now own shares in the company.
Secondary Market:
- The large investors and institutions who bought the stock in the primary market now decide the would like to sell part of their ownership in the company for some reason.
- They use the stock exchanges to publicize that they want to sell some stock and tell what they want to sell it for (the asking price).
- The stock exchanges provide an efficient way to match up many investors who want to buy and sell stock in a company.
- Other investors check with the stock exchange and see that someone wants to sell shares in the company and decide to buy some shares.
- If the new investors are happy with the price the first investor is asking they can place an order to buy the stock at that market price.
- When this happens the trade is settled and the money / stock is transferred.
- On the other hand, if the new investor wants to buy the stock but thinks the asking price is too high they can place an order to buy the stock, but specify a lower price (the bid price).
- When this happens the order goes to the floor of the exchange and is held there until another investor comes along and is willing to sell their stock at that lower price.
- When there are orders that match up the trades are executed and the money/stock change hands. |

The stock market is highly regulated and enforced by law,,it is just a place set up to buy and sell (trade) stock ( goods, oil, gold, silver ,coffee etc) shares( a piece of paper owned by an investor to show ownership of a percentage of a company),,these can be traded to others via the selling floor or more commonly a computer at a price set by the market place,,the price will be dependent on various things from demand for the item, value of the item, previous trading patterns, forecasts of the market and the trading of similar stock/shares from other countries,,,Brokers and their "jobbers" make their money by adding a levy to all sales they make,,,that`s it in a nutshell but it goes much deeper and more complex than that simple explanation,, |

Shares are distributed which represent the companies capital, these shares must be held by someone, if more people want to buy them than sell, the price goes up, conversely if more want to sell price drops, simply supply & demand in action. |
