Is it for the long term or short term? If short, a high yield CD or savings account would be ideal. Also, a high yield money market is good too. If for the long term, then consider a Roth IRA. It helps saving for retirement, withdrawals are tax-free, and doesn't ever have to be withdrawn. It can continue to grow tax-free if you choose. Personally, I would invest in a Roth IRA. The max is $4,000 because you're under 50, and take the other $1,000 and put it into a high yield online savings account. You'll pay taxes on a CD, not a savings account. Its smarter. |

Skip the banks (don't forget to subtract 2-3%/year inflation from their rates of return). Buy a mix of one high dividend stock, three defensive stocks, and a gold stock (IAU) (or instead of gold, a savings bond -- both for safety reasons).
IFN (7.4%/year, plus stock increase), KO (Coke), PG, PEP, and IAU or a government savings bond.
Have your bank set up your account to buy stocks and put your money in here. Within one year you can expect your $5000 turn into at least $6000 but more likely $6500-$7000. The year after that, the $6000-$6500 will become $7200-$7800, etc.
Good luck, and go for it! |

Wow, I'm impressed you have saved so much at your age. I'm 23 and currently investing in stocks, mutual funds, ROTH IRA, savings bonds, and Prosper. I'm actually addicted to Prosper which is a Person-to-Person lending website. I'm lending money out to diversify my portfolio. It's fun to read borrower's story. And the rate is pretty high too. Good Luck !

Start loking at speculatives investments. I was introduced to the idea of the revalue of currency of iraq. Before the war the iraqi dinar was worth 3 US dolars for 1 iraqi dinar. Right now its 1 US dollar for 1216 iraqi dinars. The speculation is that after Iraq has a stable economy and a greater output of oil and gas it will comeback to a level simillar to pre-war era. I invested $1,000 and have almost 1,000,000 dinars. The only thing i do is search the internet in a forum to se how thingas are going. If you want more info just go to http://www.investorsiraq.com Good luck. |

I would put 1/2 ($2500.00) into a quality mid cap energy company, as energy prices remain high.
ME (Mariner Energy)
VLO (Valero Energy Corp.)
ATPG (ATP Oil and Gas)
RIG (Transocean Sedco Forex)
are among my favorites in the sector.
The other 1/2 I would put into a quality mid cap name from China, you can do more research yourself on that one, I like the energy plays there as well. |
