I'm helping my son ( 12 ) invest . What's a safe option .?
I don't do stocks and my 30 million pound business is private but my 12 year old son really wants to start . I gave him £1,000 and he wants to invest it in anything but a bank . What should i advise him to do ?

Apple..They put their Ideas out there so he can follow the process longer (conception to reality) and how values change along the way. Plus it's a decent stock anyway.

For your son who is still young, in the future, he'd really appreciate it if you set him up with a Roth IRA. Invest in a Roth IRA atleast to start out!

In order to make this a good learning experience, I would set him up on a basic stock screener- either through your brokerage site or yahoo finance. He can use a few simple criteria to develop a managable list of companies, and then look at some research reports.

This many not be the best way to invest for the long term, but it would be a way to learn how others evaluate and rank stocks.

Invest in a undervalued blue chip. It will rise sooner or later.

yes let him invest!!! stocks is fun and goes up and down a lot more intresting than a CD or a bond.

a bond is debt.
a stock is ownership

what i would do in your position.

explain to him diversify! explain to him he need to have several diffrent companies

you want him to make money of course.
(invest in US stock exchanges)
when he gets home from school he will be able to see how the stocks are doing while the trading day is still on

if you want him in companies to make money that I like a lot.

FCX -copper and gold fueld by china growth
MO -Altria people always smoke
CBI -Infastructure gets lots of oil contracts
RIG -offshore oil driller $$$ lots of money
CME - merged w/ CBOT and now has a monoply
MCD - everyone eats Mcdonalds
LNN-fueled by agriculture boom(great quater)doubled earnings
SGR-manages 40% nuclear power plants and will proly get contracts for the upcoming ones

tdameritrade.com is the best place i think to trade

Congratz on company he should look up to you.

if you have any questions you can email me jgreensteinus@yahoo.com

It's always great to get your kids involved in understanding and participating in the marketplace at an early age. Perhaps you should start by showing him how almost all the products and toys he has are made by companies. Try and pick one of his favorite toy or games and investing a little into their company stock.
