Minimum of $1000 to open a STAR fund with Vanguard. It is a 'fund of funds'.... super low expense ratio, no-load, no fees. You get a very wide range of funds all in one place, for a low price. You are reducing risk while still pulling in good returns.... you can't beat that.

Invest in education. We are in the early stages of a bear market, not the time to be buying a guaranteed mutual fund loss and as you lack experience individual stocks right now would likely be suicide.

I agree with BoscoB, in that you should not invest at the current time. The markets are looking excessively weak, and another 5-10% decline in the S&P 500 is not unlikely. As he said, this would be a great time for you to study the markets, and learn as much as you can. I currently expect the markets to recover towards the end of the third quarter, or beginning of the fourth quarter. If my belief is correct, that means you have a minimum of 8 months to study the markets, and understand how financial assets are valued, and how to properly analyze them. For this, I would recommend you take a look at Investopedia, a website dedicated to investor education. In particular, take a look at the tutorials the site has to offer, as well as some of the articles, as they prove very helpful for most people. You should also open a virtual practice account online, to practice what you learn. I would suggest looking at The UpDown for this, as they pay members real money if their portfolio consistently beats the market, or they write quality analyses. Of course, you will need a website with all of the financial data you will need to collect, as you will understand from Investopedia's tutorials. For this, I recommend Yahoo! Finance, as it is free and has nearly all of the information you need. You should also take a look at any company's financial reports, located on the company's website, typically under the Investor Relations page, before making any investment decision, as they contain a lot of relevant, useful information. In utilizing these resources, you will have the ability to practice strategies you learn on Investopedia on The UpDown's practice portfolio (without risking your money in this weak market) by utilizing information found on Yahoo! Finance and other websites. For the time being, I would suggest putting your funds in short-term CD's at your bank so you gain some interest. I hope this helped.

Best of luck!

Trailing stops are designed to lock in profit levels. Trailing stops literally trail along your increasing profit and adjust your stop loss levels accordingly. A trailing stop set for 15 pips will trigger once a trader's position is positive at least 16 pips. From this level the trailing stop will adjust pip for pip as your profit level continues to increase. A trader whose trailing stop is set to 15 pips and who is positive 20 pips has protected at least 5 pips of profit. As this trader's position increases so will their protected profit level.
