It would be very worth while to speak to a professional financial manager, such as associated with a company like Merrill Lynch, or Fidelity, etc. The market is at an all time high right now, - you may as well get in on it.

Congrats, thats a good chunk of change.

For starters, I recommend you put the money in money market..--this will give you access to your dough and allow it to be safe and gain good interest while you figure out the investment part.

So 40k...where would you like to put it? Are you looking to put it in the stock market? Maybe a down payment on a house/condo/or Land ? Would the money go far in your hobby about to become career?

Regarding investments in the stock market...there are many caveats..most based on your risk/tolerance threshold--Ican't really tell you whats hot ..or good for you without knowing your financial background. As a Certified financial planner would do..for a fee..they'd dig deep..at least they should--and help you maximize the best ways to put that money away. Like a term life insurance policy for 1mil...for the next 30years. (this won't use up the entire 40k and has a certain bang to it) Or putting the money into tax deferredaccounts. Maybe get all your trust paperwork in order for now and the future...often people won't see lawyers in advance cuz they don't want to spend their weekly pay. Still again that's just a grand or so.

How about a great exploration trip adventure for you? Yes..odd maybe..but reality..there is no better investment made than in yourself...so while you're still alive and kicking..get out there and invest in you.

Wish I knew more ..so I could be more specific.

Good luck..and enjoy the 40k...its a good chunk of change. spread it out so that you can remember it often..as opposed to plunking it down into something that won't remind you about it...and having you saying..geeze I coulda used some of the 40k on this...and that etc...over the years :)

You do not give enough information. In order to answer, it would be helpful to know how old you are and when you expect to need the money.

If you can wait for it until you are 59 1/2 years old, an annuity would be a good choice. Many experts will tell you otherwise, but then they cannot give you an alternative that will give you a guarantee that your principal will be safe. Today, you can even get a guarantee of principal with stock market like investments if you are willing to consider paying a fee.

You may wish to read a book that I have written which you can review by going to my website:
