The best bet for someone your age is a low priced index fund. These have stood the test of time and take very little to no care for them. Warren Buffet even suggests that for young investors.

Are you goig to invest the money long-term?

A great long-term investment, in my opinion, are DRIP Plans. They are inexpensive to start and maintain. The best part is you get to choose from the best International Corporations worldwide.

Best of Luck

Do your research on mutual funds. About 75% of them under perform the market. All of them have management fees, and some have sales loads. The large majority of them don't sound to good to me.

ETF's are basically the same thing as mutual funds, with lower management fees on average.

I personally would recommend ETF's or DRIP Plans.

Good Luck

Depends on your college plans. If you need the money for college, and you don't want to make the mistake of getting into debt, then just put it into a decent Money Market Account for now. If you don't need it for 4+ years, then a good growth stock mutual fund is the only way to go!

In this economy I would put my money in gold. When ever our economy seems shakey, Gold and Oil skyrocket.

I put £3k into an ISA bank account and made something like £150 the next year .... while the £3k was stored for the year I couldn't touch it until it had matured.

You might have something similer in the US.
