Chris,
Congrats on having a nice lump sum. I hope that you weren't hurt in some accident to get a settlement like that. I recommend that you interview a fee-only Certified Financial Planner (CFA) or three and let them propose an investment portfolio to you. You want fee only so that they don't try to sell you investments where they make a fat commission and you only get so-so results.
Do a little reading like Buckets of Money by Ray Lucia (cheesy title but a great book) and Stay Rich Forever and Ever by Ed Slott.
With a good plan, you will have not only a great retirement but you could have an income from your money that you could use before retirement.

Depends on growth rate and how much you want for retirement. If you can manage an annual growth rate of 9%, you'll have $6,548,535 for retirement at age 60.

holy crap, you are one rifch 23 year old,

Dude, BUY real estate. there is tons of places across the us where house that sold for 350,000 18 months ago are selling for 250,000 today.

Moving on the basis of simple math, if you invest this money with some help from a financial adviser who knows what they are doing, you should have plenty of money for retirement by the time you turn 65. Compounded quarterly at 6% interest with no additional investments (and with some good investments, six is far shy of your target), I see:

A(Final Amount)=270000(1+.06/4)^(42*4)

or: A=$3,023,509

I'm not an investment expert, but you should have plenty to invest if the first thing you do is pay someone to help you do it?

Do you already know what investments for your retirement? You might be interested what a part (10%?) of that money can do for your retirement. Just email me at johntcp@yahoo.com with your brief investment plan and I'll show you how and where to invest.

You can invest it for whatever reason you wish.

investing is always risky! But diversification is a must! Do not invest long-term now days ( old mentality of "buy and hold stocks does not work! ) some of the best investments You can make are in WATER MUTUAL FUNDS...i personally trade just currencies. When you make profit on my recommendation, find me ! We'll share it by donating to orphanages!
