I am looking into investing $100,000. I will potentially be charged 1.25% quarterly on the portfolio so what i
is the actual quarterly rate?

Thanks for your help.

Oh I am going to make sure on that before I give any money of course. The thing is that if it is 1.25/4 that's not bad. But yeah 5% annually would be bad because I would be earning no more than if I put it in a savings, not even keeping up with inflation or barely.

Is it a "wrap fee" (meaning there are no up-front charges and no back-end [CDSC] charges)? Because if it is, 1.25% to manage your money is a very good price. If you're paying an up-front commission (usually 5.75%) and the wrap fee then you're getting ripped off.

As for the whole "you can manage your own money better, cheaper theory" -- that is incorrect for most folks. I could learn how to take care of my car and do a lot of the repairs myself but I'd rather pay someone who knows a heck of a lot more than me to do it. The same is true with your money. An experienced professional should be able to do MUCH BETTER than the average investor on his own.

People are emotionally connected to their money and often make decisions based on those emotions rather than what is good for the market.

Exactly 1.25% on your portfolio

Some of the best mutual funds in the business don't charge more than 1% management fee annually and have no in or out fees (sales load or disbursement fees) and you can diversify with other funds to spread risk. Even the 1.25% if it is annual seems pretty steep unless you are getting mega returns on your money.
A first class financial advisor will charge you a flat hourly rate for advice, but you manage the portfolio. Rates vary from $100 to $200 per hour, but you get what you pay for. Good advisors will not steer you into any product or make any side money off of you, they work only for you.

There are several ways to charge:

balance at the beginning of the quarter
balance at the end of the quarter (in arrears)
weighted daily average balance during the quarter

Whichever they charge you are getting RIPPED OFF if they are charging 1.25% every quarter.

1.25% per quarter is robbery. You can invest it yourself much better.

You can buy the S&P 500 Symbol (SPY) and it will only cost you 0.10% per YEAR and it will beat 80% of mutual funds and I'll wager 80% of hedge funds over a 20 year period. Bad hedge funds don't suffer through bad year after year cause either blow up or close.

Its your money. Why should you be charged anything for managing your own money? You're writing about paying someone or a firm over $5,000 per year to manage YOUR portfolio. How about managing your own money?

I'll let you in on a little secret: NO ONE will manage your own money better than you will or should manage your own money.

Don't get me wrong. I would DEFINITELY seek good, sound financial advice - on an hourly basis OR as requested of a good, qualified, trusted financial planner.

BUT I would NOT blindly let someone or a firm have total control of my hard-earned money. Even if you inherited the money or it was given to you as a gift, you still did something OR didn't do something to earn that money.

Thanks for asking your Q! I just thought I would give you a little more "food for thought."

VTY,
Ron Berue
Yes, that is my real last name!
