I don't understand what's going on with the financial markets?
Can someone explain to me what's going on? I'm not too bright and would like a detailed explanation on how not having the bailout will affect the U.S. economy and if it is better that way to let banks fail?
Additional Details
Okay, so I read some of the answers, and wanted to add, lawmakers especially the conservatives in the House is voting against the $700 billion bailout are due to strong opposition from their respective constituents. Now having said that, some of you answer by saying that "we are screwed" as individuals and some are saying that this doesn't solve it and my actually hurt us in the long run, according to a link that led to a letter of opposition to Congress. I'm also watching Fast Money and Jim Cramer Mad Money, and they say it should be passed. Those constituents arguing against the bailout knows that the bailout is unsuccessful?

The hemorrhaging of the US economy has got to be dealt with directly & you are seeing history being made as ONE of the FIRST right moves that has been made today !

Here is what some economists have to say about it:

Basically, many economists think that this bailout will damage the US economy rather than make it better.

The stock market always reacts with more fear and more greed than should be the case. If the banks fail the country will lose in all markets, the dollar will be like peso's and foreign investors will pull out of the bond and stock markets. There will be less money for loans and we would end up in a depression, as the bussiness community would have no working capital and there will be little money to loan them.

no bail out for bank meaning all the bad loans mortage related can't come off the balance sheet, banks would have less liquidity to make new loans to individual and businesses.. credit crunch will worsen, eventually business growth will stop and unemployment rate will spike when companies start laying off people, consumer spending goes down, all chain reaction linked closed to one another, in other words, we are screwed.

Good luck! :)

I've answered this question many times today. Check out this link, I don't feel like typing it again.

Banks are not failing. Smart money is investing in them right now. They are the only stocks on the market that are rising today.
