I found some old '80's $20's. Are they worth adding to my collection?
Okay, so first off I would like to start by saying, if you aren't interested in this subject, please don't even bother, because your answer will not mean anything to me, in other words, I don't want to here that they are worth just $20 dollar, because they aren't. So, at my great grandmas house she just passed away :(. I found $500 worth of $20's stashed away. I needed the money, so I deposited $400 of it and decided to keep the other $100, especially after the person @ the bank was surprised to see them. Its the older design. The oldest one is 1981 A, then I have 3 1985's, finally one 1988 A (which is in extra fine, I would say). Are they worth saving for some day, because personally, I have never seen this design before, but I was not from the time. Please help me easy 10 points. Oh and I read somewhere that they are worth at least $22. What do you think???

No, money from 30 years ago is not a collectable item.

MAYBE if it were in mint conditions with sequential serial numbers, it might be worth saving, but it will probably be another 20 years before it would even START to be worth more than $20. 1980 was not very long ago you know.

The 1988 is CERTAINLY not anything unusual.

1980s is not old-it's worth face value. period. - spend it or save, don't collect it. no one is going to pay you more than $20.00 for a 1980's, 1970's, 1960's, etc. $20.00 bill - silver certificates ar the only bills in the last 100+ yrs worth anything and they have to be in excellent condition to be worth even a $1 more over face value IF you can find anyone interested in paying more than face value

<<<Are they worth adding to my collection?>>>

That depends upon the purpose of your collection. If the purpose of your collection is an investment that you expect to gain value, they are probably not worth adding. You probably would make more money by depositing the money and collecting interest on in. If the purpose of your collection is to create and historical or artistic archive, or just for the joy of collecting, it is probably worth adding adding at least one to your collection so you have a sample of that design in your collection.

To be of much interest to an established collector any of these would have to be graded extra fine (if there is a star in the serial number) or better (if there is not a star in the serial number).

<<< I read somewhere that they are worth at least $22. What do you think???>>>

I think that is pretty safe to assume a retailer would charge a collector at least $22 for any of them. However, remember that the retailer would have to pay at least $20 for any of them, and that he has to make a profit when he sells it.

The exact value to a collector depends not only upon the series and the grade, but the Federal Reserve Bank that issued it as well. Of the notes you listed, assuming none is graded better than extra fine, the most valuable any could be would be the 1981 A if it is graded extra fine (40) and has a star in the serial number, which might retail for as much as $50 to $70. However, if it is only graded "fine" and does not have a star in the serial number a retailer would only expect to get about $22 for it, and you would be lucky if he was willing to pay you $21 for it. For comparison, if you had invested the same $20 in 1985 and received 5% per year interest, compounded annually, your investment would be worth $67.73 today.
