Without an idea of your risk tolerance and time horizon, everyone here is simply guessing. Find an online calculator to assist you in a risk tolerance analysis, or better yet find a local Financial Planner to assist you. Try the Planner Search feature of the Financial Planning Association's website: www.fpanet.org

Consider buying an ETF (Exchange Traded Fund, it trades just like stock but represents lots of diffrent companies) though a discount broker, like DIA (diamond) that tracks the DOW, or anything else, in the long run you should have a very nice return, probably an average after ten years of around 15% a year, also with DIA you will also recieve quarterly dividends, so you will have some cash flow.

I suggest you stocks, mutual funds and Exchange Traded Funds. If you need detailed advice drop me a line.

A U.S. Treasury Bill or a bank certificate of deposit.

For U.S. treasury securities, see the following webb site:

You need to have time frame.
Short term and worry about inflation then buy TIP.
