people stop....you CAN buy five different stocks with 1000 and you don't need one index fund to do it either. I prefer ETF's over any one lone stock. But what you want to do is pick the five RIGHT ones long time companies with a good track record (maybe not necessarly in price but no cooking the books like enron or imclone (or whatever Martha got in trouble in). What you want to do is pick 5 different stocks in different sectors. For EXAMPLE Microsoft, Target, Chevron, Disney and Bank of America. Right there you have tech, oil, media, retail and a bank. $250 (or so) in each one. Keep it balanced (don't go over 20% in any one of them) and go for it.
Good luck and put stop losses (a price under what you initially pay for the stock) on every order.
