Don't buy one stock. Buy an index fund, so you are diversified. Many trade as ETFs, and while I won't recommend one for you, I can direct you here to make your own decision.

Everyone has different objectives, and risk tolerance, so please don't follow any advice for stock picks you receive on here, or even from friends and relatives. Most picks are speculation, and I've never heard of one working out really well. |

Good growth mutual fund with no sales charge and low yearly expense, such as Vanguard S&P 500.
Individuals should stick with mutual funds unless they are going to do a lot of homework, and have a lot more money to invest. |

Sounds like you're off to gamble.
Are you saying that you'll take the advice of strangers. You don't know their qualifications or motives.
Good luck with that.
Your question includes no reference to an "asset allocation". It sounds like you may not even have one.
Bottom line: You're asking the wrong question. It should be;
"How do I spend the next year learning all I need to know, so I don't make the typical mistakes new investors make (like asking other people.... how to invest my money)". |

You should learn to trade on your own. Some professionals can make 2 to 3 did-git returns on their money every year.
All you need is to learn a few simple rules and develop a system. This is a good site that will teach you a ton of information on how to trade. |

Personally i buy into a stock i have been watching for quite some time.
The markets are in so much tumoil at the moment i would be very apprehensive to suggest what sectors to buy into.
Mining is a good area, and i will probably buy into that eventually.
I say eventually as the likes of Rio Tinto or Billiton shares are around £43 sterling, other companies are slightly cheaper.
Now Billiton are looking to aquire Rio, however Rio is not happy with the bid price, Billiton has been after Rio 10 years now, so there is a lot of history between these two.
Presently Billiton say they will not increase their bid, so its hard to judge what to do.
Thing is Rio has doubled its output of iron ore mainly due to China, so its a good take-over target, so its share price may make a good gain as a consequence if Billiton are sucessful in aquiring it.
So mining shares if your certain enough of the market.
But do your home work before you shell out $3000 on any company or sector. |

I would stick to something conservative. There is a belief that Mutual Funds are safe. While some are safer than stocks, 75% of these funds underperform the stock market as a whole.
I think a great strategy is DRIP's. If you use these little known plans, you don't care if the market is up or down. It is a long-term investment.
go to : low-cost-stock-recommendations
.com
Click on the "DRIP's" Button on the Navigation Bar
There are many benefits from these plans. If you decide you are interested, click on the "ING" advertisement on the same page. It will tell you the least expensive way to get started. |
