first of all, be careful who you meet off the internet. No offence to daniel.b but you wouldnt leave your kids with him if he offered would you and you didnt know him? so check out VERY carefully. get your lawyer to double check everything. my dad funds businesses short term, so like you, wants his money back + extra within a few years. He says if your new to the game be careful. I say, property. I am 19 years old, and on a gap year b4 i go to university next year. I got left enough money in my god fathers will to purchase a house last year. No mortgage (he left me a lot of money) i rented it out to a few families who wanted whilst they went sailng nearby. made a mint and im proud of it. gonna have no uni debts, my own house and a car to my name. already lookin at buyin a flat with all the rent thats comin in to add to my "empire" lol! but seriously, houseprices in the uk are on the up, not sure what theyr like in the us, but property is DEFINATLEY the way.there is so much settin up required as a franchisee and yes, gene therapy or stem cell reseach is a money maker, but not COMPLETE guarentees due to laws etc. good luck!

I know of numerous opportunities for investing those funds.. but it depends on what you're expected outcomes are.. Also depends on your interests and expected level of involvment..

The most exciting opportunity I currently have is an opportunity to be part of a new recording studio and recording label which will very likely produce numerous hits and possibly gain Australian awards.. give you the opportunity to gain a foothold in the music industry if you like music.. genre's being produced include rock/pop/urban.. genuine hardcore hip hop.. and classical... "negotiable".. 3-6month set up timeframe..

I also have an opportunity to buy into a new and fully licenced financial planning and finance broking company, with full suite of accreditations/compliane and licensing as per Australian Trade laws and ASIC codes. This can produce VERY high income easily as Key Director has nearly 20 years experience in the industry and is highly regarded and well known and fully accredited by all major instutions in Australia. Subject to negotiations, location will likely be Sydney with potential for franchising too and also interstate offices. Most likely will be upmarket style boutique with low overhead running costs and highest quality products and services available on the Australian market! Also includes portfolio analysis and management.. with stellar proven track record.. 3 month setup time.. investment will buy share of company. as this will initally be a private company with plans to list as a public company in the future. Upto 40% share availalbe for purchase by negotiations, includes minimal legal costs as best lawyers in Sydney are associates. . Will come equiped with Australian Security Dealers License and MIAA Full Membership and also Independent Finance Company status with accreditation to most avaialble lending products in the Australian market and NO LENDING LIMITS. NO RESTRICTIONS! This is Guaranteed GOLD

That's a tricky one. Assuming $500K is a suitably *small* percentage of your liquid net worth, the first order of business should be to try get some degree of diversification instead of plugging the whole amount into a single deal. I vaguely remember hearing that for every 20 VC deals, 17 go belly up, 2 break even and one pays for the rest, so you really need to find some way to participate in a sufficiently large number of deals to have any hope of a reasonable return. For such a small sum (in VC terms), I think you'd have to try to invest with some reputable company that routinely evaluates and funds such deals. As I understand it most of VC funds are structured as limited partnerships. I'd also imagine that VC firms won't even talk to you about becoming a potential investor (limited partner) unless you meet the SEC criteria of an 'accredited investor'. Needless to say, holding shares in such a partnership would be an extremely risky investment and I wouldn't dream of trying to pick a VC company/fund all by myself unless I had extensive experience in the area.

You may look in sunrise sectors such as Healthcare IT services start up companies in India to get higher returns, However, you have to be quite selective for these start up, whether they are run by qualified and dedicated management and whether they have customers roped in for their solution and what are there growth plans which are the usual questions.
Another way of finding startups could be go thru venture capital firms like Sequioa Capitals etc.
But you also need to have good credentials such as from where money is coming to get into the business....
happy hunting

Stem Cell research is the fastest growing market. It is where you want it. You may have to go outside this country to do so but if you want to make your 500k into 5mil it is the way to go.
