Ryan | I have $5000 to invest, what do I do with it? |
I am 16 and have $5000 from working my *** off the last year. I have been keeping it in a bank account with 3.75% interest....but is there anything better I can do with it? I am willing to take some risk, and would like to have access to my money fairly quickly if I need it. |

Try an online savings account with a bank such as ING. They have higher rates than that. I use ING and the current rate is around 4.5%. Also, you can get a CD for a short term like 6 months which will give you over 5%.
I think that HSBC and Citi have similar programs, I just happen to be partial to ING. |

The fact that you may need the money quickly means that you should not be taking any risk with it. If you invest in the stock market, you should plan on using that money for a minimum of 5 years. The stock market is too volatile to risk money that you may need.
Keep thinks in your current account or find another account that is paying more in interest.
If you are not going to need the money for at least 5 years, then think about investing in a index fund that tracks the S&P500 or something like that.

You are best off taking as little risk as possible and keeping the money in a bank.
You say you are willing to take 'some risk', but at the same time want to access your money fairly quickly - this suggests you need the money. Only put at risk money you can afford to lose - $5000 is not enough to seriously invest, and could easily be decimated overnight (especially in the current situation).
You did well saving the money, now work for a few more years, save a similar amount, and you really will be in a position to invest. |

That's a pretty decent interest rate. Bank account certainly gives you the most liquidity. An internet bank account is fairly liquid and might give you a better rate - shop around and see if it'll work for you.
Also you are never too young to start a Roth IRA. I know retirment is the last thing on your mind, but that money will really grow. You don't have to max it out (which would be $4000). You could just put in a $1000 and add to it next year. But you won't be able to get that money back til you retire.
According to a chart I looked at on USA Today if you invest $2000 in a Roth IRA each year from age 15- age 18 and never invest another dime it will mature to $372,034 by the time you are 60. If you invest $2000 a year from age 15 until age 60 that money will be worth$1.25 million. That's something to think about.
Whatever you decide to do is fine, just don't blow it on iphones and stuff that won't make you money. It's ok to have a few fun things, but I know I blew a lot of money when I was younger. |
