Great Scott
I have a financial question?
If I claim my daughter as a dependent because she is a full-time college student, can she claim herself as a dependent when she files her return?

If you claim your daughter as a dependent on your income tax return, she cannot claim herself on her income tax return.

If an individual is filing his or her own tax return, and the individual can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return, the individual cannot claim his or her own personal exemption. In this case, your daughter should check the box on her return indicating that someone else can claim her as a dependent.

Mrs. G
No. Only one of you can claim her.

Worldly25
Of course not. She is one person and can only be a dependent on one tax return. Financially beneficial for you to claim her.

rtfm
No. If you claim her as a dependent, she cannot claim herself. She must check "yes" to the question "Are you being claimed as a dependent on someone else's return?"

smartypants909
No, she must check the box that says Can anybody else claim you as a dependent?

momoftwo
Only one of you can file a claim. You might want to let her claim herself, it opens more doors for federal money.

515r9
No she cannot be claimed twice. There is a section that asks if anyone else can claim you as a dependent, if you claim her, she must note that she is being claimed.
