what should i do
I have been given shares of a private limited company from my grandad.?
The shares where divided between family members. everyone else wants keep them but i want to sell. do i have to get someone in the family to buy them or can i try and sell them elsewhere. What are my rights?

Landlord
They are NOT public shares. You can not sell them publicly.

You are likely required to sell under your grandfathers heirs or back to the company.

BTW, the value is likely not very much. You would be stupid to sell them. If the company is ever bought or goes public you will regret this move.

You can sell the shares to whomever you choose as long as you hold the legal title of them, just be sure to realise that you may have to pay capital gains tax on the money you make if it is over a certain threshold.

ken p
grandad should have incised if you pull out they are to be sold to other partners

Empress
if the shares are in your name you can sell them to whoever you want including back to the company.

Yahoo Answers is the absolute wrong place to solicit advice for such an important issue. Get a lawyer:)

Unbiased.co.uk Find an IFA
You need to check the Articles of Association of the company. This will detail whether or not you have to offer them to existing shareholders or whether you can go outside this group. In essence, these are the rules and regulations of the company. You can obtain a copy from Companies House. There will probably be a nominal charge for this service. Alternatively, the company secretary of the aforementioned company should be able to provide you with a copy.

if you get Dividends as a shareholder, why would you want to sell if it is a good company?

golden
That's gratitude for you lol why don't you ask the others if they want to buy your shares if not sell to a private investor
