That all depends on your time-frame, what you want to do with the money, and how much you have.

If you have a lot of money, talk to a licensed professional about a Variable Universal Life Policy that invests in mutual funds, if you plan on investing long term but have family to leave money behind to. If your investment tanks, you would still have the same death benefit.

If you only have a little money, Stocks are probably not the place for you. Remember you could get hit by a bus and need money to pay your bills for a few months. There is NO WAY to guarantee no loss of money in stocks, otherwise people wouldn't buy anything else. ALSO- Bonds can be unsafe, too. It is possible that you can buy bonds and then they end up with a lower selling price later. Just look up the charts for a Bond Mutual fund on yahoo finance and you will see what I mean.

Finally, if you just have a "medium" amount of money, stick with well diversified funds or index funds that track a broad array of stocks, like an S&P Index fund. If you can wait a while, put it into an IRA to maximize tax benefits (Traditional IRA saves you taxes now, based on your income tax bracket, while Roth saves you taxes later -- check with IRS to be sure you qualify).

The chance of losing money is the risk you take in exchange for the possible reward of making money.

Finally, remember: you don't lose any money until you sell, so knowing how long you can wait is key.

Oh, lordy, kid, there is no such thing as a guarantee against stock market loss.

The safest thing is bonds, if you really want to invest.

You need to look at the company's financials and see if they are healthy and see how their stock price is compared to the last couple of years.

Good Financials + low Stock price + good economic outlook for that company = making money

Sound simple? Well it's not... Good luck

Before putting any of your hard earned money into the stock market, read up on investing. Buy going to a bookstore and browsing the personal finance and investment sections, there should be several good books to choose from. The same is true with looking at the magazine sections for the personal finance magazines. Additionally, look at the internet, not for hot stock tips but for how to invest in general.
