I WOULD DIVIDE UP 3 WAYS ;

1) CWF - $7.00/SHARE, a 12.85% dividend paid montly 1.07% monthly ( paid on last day of month) , liquid trades on NYSE ; Chartwell Dividend & Income Fund Inc. is a closed-ended balanced mutual fund launched and managed by Chartwell Investment Partners, L.P. The fund invests in public equity and fixed income markets of the United States. It also invests in convertible securities, or preferred stocks. For the fixed income component, the fund invests in non-convertible debt securities consisting primarily of corporate bonds. It employs fundamental analysis to create its equity portfolio. The fund benchmarks the performance of its portfolio against the Standard & Poor's 500 Composite Index. Chartwell Dividend & Income Fund Inc was founded in June 24, 1998 and is domiciled in the United States

2) SCMR - nasdaq $3.30/share ,Sycamore Networks is a leading provider of intelligent bandwidth management solutions for fixed line and mobile network operators worldwide. The company is flush with cash. As of January 26th, Sycamore had about $785 million in cash and equivalents on the books as well as $151 million in long-term investments. Has a 900million$ market cap. Cash is king , prime takeover candidate.

3) HOLX ; Hologic - diversified medical technologies company serving the women's health-care market. The company specializes in the screening, diagnosis, and therapy of many major women's health issues. Hologic operates in four segments: breast health, diagnostics, surgical, and skeletal health. THIS IS THE TYPE OF BUSINESS THAT IS NOT AFFECTED BY THE SLOWING ECONOMY ALSO GROWTH BY AN EMERGING FEMALE MIDDLE CLASS IN ASIA AND EASTERN EUROPE IS OFF THE CHARTS

3-5 years is a little "short" for investing in a stock fund. "Safe" way is not possible. Your savings account is not safe since the returns get killed by taxes and inflation.

Looking for specific advice from strangers is also pretty dangerous. You don't know their qualifications or motives.

Do yourself a real favor. Read a few books on basic investing and basic Mutual Fund Investing. The "Dummy" series has some really good ones. That will point you in the right direction.

I'd be REAL careful in these times. I suppose you could make a "killing", but the odds are greater you'd lose it all. The "safe" way to invest is to leave it where it is.

But...... I know this Prince in Botswillvania that has this cash flow problem...........

You can put it in a 3-5 year cd or the 'Freedom Fund'. (this is one I was looking into but don't have any details on yet). I've heard an average return of 8%, each year, over the past 5 years.

Invest in ETF's: ETFs are cheaper than mutual funds. ETFs have very low annual expenses, nearly 20 basis points or 0.2% less. As against this, actively managed mutual funds show average expenses exceeding 135 basis points (1.35%). This does not include the extra 2% - 5% as loads, 12(b)-1 marketing fees, transactions costs, and soft dollar expenses mutual funds, passed on to you but never informed, except in very fine print that nobody cares to read.

ETFs have a lower turnover than most mutual funds. As ETFs do not require active management and hold nearly a steady stream of stocks, there is hardly any portfolio turnover. On the other hand, many actively managed mutual funds churn their portfolio many times throughout the year, leading to recurring transaction fees on every purchase and sale.

Unless you are an experienced investor, I would caution against individual stocks and get rich quick schemes. Reduce your risk and
check out Vanguard ( http://www.vanguard.com )
Now is an excellent time to put your money to work. Spread the risk by investing in a mutual fund (Vanguard's STAR is a fund of funds-a fund which buys shares in other funds-and therefore carries a lower risk) . It is comprised of 65% stocks and 35% bonds and will offer greater that your 3.75% return.
Make sure any high interest loans/credit cards are paid off and you have 2-3 months emergency cash before investing.
Vanguard is a low cost, no load mutual fund company. There are others; I have been with them for 30 years and retired early. Your results may vary.
Read the "Planning and Education" tab if you visti their website.
Good luck

I would go with companies that are going "green", because I think that will be 'the next big thing'. Also, anything having to do with genetic research/genetic engineering, because it has gotten HUGE in the last 5 years. But this IS JUST my OPINION.
